Dr David Thurber, DDS Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Positive experience: I was referred to Dr. Thurber to evaluate a couple of teeth (one gone long ago and another broken). I think I was a bit overwhelmed by this experience as had no questions during my consult with Dr. Thurber. His treatment & financial advisor, Emilee, was wonderful. I'll f/u once I have had my first procedure slated right now for 6/3/26.

Fantastic experience: Words cannot describe how happy I am with Dr. thurber and his team! I needed my wisdom teeth out for years but was extremely hesitant after hearing the horror stories. After a friend got hers done there and finally going for a consultation I felt 10000% comfortable and ready. The wait was worth it. I got all 4 of mine out. First they asked questions and hooked me up to laughing gas which was an interesting sensation when that kicked in. Dr. Thurber came in asked a few more questions and they must've started the anesthesia because all I remember was telling the nurse about baby highland cows and boom out cold. An hour later I when I awoke with no pain and didn't even realize my teeth where gone (yes I took them home) moments later I was up, walking and heading home and wanting milkshakes. I'm on day 2 and feel great! No pain or discomfort. Just a mild headache.

Negative experience: **Update** The office left their number for me to call back in a reply after reading my review. With my name being publicly visible on the review, they have decided to take the lowest effort patch to correct the situation rather than find my records and put in actual effort to correct the problem. Just another sign that there primary goal is to make as much money with as little effort as possible **Original Review** I had a very poor experience here, and basically got charged to not have work done. I got an extraction and implant done last year for about $1800 at a different office before I moved here to Syracuse. I expected a similar charge, but you given a $6000+ quote that cost me $200 to get. First thing first, I called to make the appointment, and said I’d be able to pay candy and just wanted to get the work done. After a bit of back and forth, they scheduled the appointment for 3 months later, and I expected the get actual work done. I had already had x-rays at my previous dentist, but they said they needed a specialized 360 xray, and I said fine even though it’s not covered by insurance (this wasn’t needed for my last implant). A few days before my appointment, and I get a reminder call about my consult. There was no way to get the work done on my next visit. At this point, I was frustrated after waiting so long and not getting what I thought we had scheduled 3 months ago. I decided to go in anyways and see what they said. Once I was able to speak to the doctor, I heard what sounded like a sales pitch, and not a conversation. I listened as he sold me a buildup that was needed because “without a tooth there, the bone will have recessed”. The tooth was still in my mouth as he was telling me this (I previously had a root canal on this tooth, so no nerves and no real pain). We didn’t really talk about options, he just rolled through his usual process instead. After speaking with the doctor there was a short wait for the folks to get me a quote. I balked at being given an estimate more than 3 times what I paid previously. When I asked about using local anesthesia to remove the cost of general anesthetic, the woman on the billing office got a bit rude, and asked me if I discussed this with the doctor. I hadn’t obviously. As I mentioned earlier, I didn’t really have a conversation with the doctor about much. They said they would send it to my insurance, and call me back when they had the info. This was months ago, and I never got a call back. From my experience, it’s obvious this office only wants to do work they can charge top tier prices for. I still have a broken tooth in my mouth, and probably will until it starts to hurt. I’m so frustrated with the medical care situation in general, and now I don’t k ow who to call that won’t try and rip me off, or charge me for doing basically nothing. If price isn’t a consideration for you, then this doctor is probably perfectly fine, but if you’re like me and are tired of being ripped off, then stay away.

Fantastic experience: Dr. Thurber is the best in Syracuse. He works really hard to put his patients at ease and performs excellent work. I highly recommend him and his team for your oral and maxillofacial needs.

Fantastic experience: I had a tooth extracted yesterday by Dr. Thurber and his staff and by far it was the best experience I have ever had with an extraction. The doctor and his staff were very accommodating and kept me up to date throughout the entire process, which actually was quite brief. Barely have any pain today and I couldn’t be happier. I would highly recommend Dr. Thurber and certainly would go back to him if needed.

Fantastic experience: Let me just start with….. HOLY SMOKES! This establishment and faculty check off so many boxes, but to start let me describe the scenario. Kept putting off getting my wisdom teeth pulled, and all of a sudden when I’m away from home for an extended amount of time, they begin to kill me. Turns out I had a pocket that could cause an infection and one tooth was growing into another…great. Called all over Syracuse and no one could get me in, by the grace of God, he put Katelin in my life and split seas to be able to squeeze me in. Now I’m 4 days out of the healing process with no pain, back to work with no swelling or irritation. The process was so extremely gracefully quick that I didn’t even notice what all happened. 100 out of 10 experience if you want all of these boxes checked ✅extremely clean and designed facility ✅ incredibly knowledgeable and skilled surgeon ✅remarkable customer care and service ✅stunning ladies working at the front desk ✅comforting nurses ✅exceptional experience Worth…the…wait

Fantastic experience: I very much recommend Dr. Thurber and his team. Im currently in the post-care phase of having several teeth removed. The teams post-care instructions are so clear. The way they talk to who brings you for surgical work is something I appreciate more after-the-fact. My friends/family take it more serious. And considering Ive been struggling with ear and throat pain for at least 6 weeks, I deeply appreciate them getting me an earlier appointment once a cancelation occurred. The entire team was kind, gentle, attentive, and listened to me. That not only sets me up for a good attitude for healing but has been a positive bump for my mental health. In the past, Ive suffered loss of income and health because it had taken me months or years to have a condition taken seriously by a medical team. Im not sure what amazing things are happening in medicine but this team has a 1-meeting "we got you" gold standard. Im actually in tears—and even those around me notice the care. Thank you to Dr. Thurber and this team. Keep up the great work and good bless.

Fantastic experience: First, don’t be discouraged by appointment times, the office and talent is worth the wait. The office is bright and cheery, and very clean. (The scene outside our room was like Cinderella- birds, bunnies…) The admin staff was friendly, clear about paperwork- very transparent about what would be covered by insurance, working w/the insurance companies to advocate for you, all the things. If you have questions, ASK, they will 100% work with you. The doctor, same. Transparent, open to questions, thorough explanation of procedures and TALENTED. He does great work, and full transparency, I’m 1000% a Karen and I was completely impressed.

Fantastic experience: Dr. Thurber comes highly recommended. He removed our older son's wisdom teeth a 2 years ago and the experience was positive. We were back for the youngest a few weeks ago and we knew all pre/post surgical care and related costs before we left the office. Dr. Thurber spoke directly with my son and explained the surgery and after care in a friendly manner and treated him with care and kindness.

Negative experience: I was dealing with severe tooth and ear pain, so my dentist referred me to Thurber’s office. I called on 3/6/25 at 11 AM, and the woman who answered was friendly, helping me get an appointment that same day. I asked if I needed to bring payment and was told no, since my insurance was in-network. However, when I arrived, the receptionist informed me that I was considered a self-pay patient for the in-network rate because my insurance didn’t cover the panoramic X-rays, and I couldn’t be seen until I paid that in full. I tried using my debit card, but it was declined without any explanation. I showed them that I had the funds available, but they told me to call my bank. After speaking with my bank, we couldn't figure out what was wrong. I then had to contact a family member and use their credit card via Venmo. Later, I found out the issue was that they had entered my card’s expiration date incorrectly three times. I finally went in to see Dr. Thurber, who was straightforward and told me I needed to have my wisdom teeth removed. Afterward, I waited 40 minutes to book a surgery date. I heard the girls chanting about how June was almost booked and how happy they were. I felt like I was at a car dealership. Emily told me I had to pay a $1,000 down payment or pay in full for a 7 AM appointment. She was trying to get me to schedule asap (must be commission). The soonest available date was 5/10 at 7am or end of June, and they would put me on pain meds and antibiotics to manage the pain for the 10 weeks until then. She stressed how important it was to take care of my teeth, saying if I waited, the date would only keep getting pushed out. She also gave me information about CareCredit. I left the office in tears and sat in my car to apply for CareCredit, which I was approved for instantly. I returned inside and decided to take the 7 AM appointment with the full payment down, but Emily said she couldn’t process it because the appointment was more than 30 days out. So more lies she told. My appointment was at 2 PM, but my prescription wasn’t called in until 7 PM. On 3/5/25, I was in even more pain, I didn’t feel comfortable with Thurber’s office, so I called Dr. Eliot’s office. They saw me right away and told me I needed to have the teeth removed that same day if I could. I scheduled the surgery for the next morning, and it turned out to be the best decision I could have made. Amazing experience with Elliot start to finish. I saved $1,500, and my emergency consultation was fully covered by my insurance, unlike Thurber’s office, which had made me self-pay for in-network price. I called to cancel my May appointment with Thurber, spoke with Kaitlyn (who was rude), and I’m still waiting for a call back regarding why my claim wasn’t submitted to insurance—over a week and a half later. Meanwhile, my entire bill with Dr. Eliot’s office has already been processed and paid by my insurance. This entire experience was a nightmare. I would not recommend Thurber’s office to anyone. They take your money and treat you horribly.

Fantastic experience: I have seen Dr. Thurber now for the second time, unfortunately to have another extraction, as of now I will never go to anyone else! I have major anxiety when it comes to my teeth. He is amazing, gentle, and very empathetic. His assistant is also fantastic and makes you feel very comfortable. The women at the front desk, well I can't say enough about them as well. All above and beyond! Thank you for making my experience an easy one! Fantastic experience: I was very pleased and relieved to see Dr. Thurber after being referred to him by my dentist. I have a failed root canal and had quite a bit of pain, swelling, and inflammation. Dr. Thurber's staff got me into the office quickly and I was very satisfied with my initial consultation with him. He explained what was wrong and went into detail about the procedures that I would be having once the inflammation cleared. I was also very comfortable with the staff that checked me in as well as his financial manager. I really felt that I was in very capable hands, which relieved a lot of my stress.

The office accepts dental insurance and billed my insurance company directly on my behalf. Upon meeting DDS Thurber, he too was pleasant and professional as well as being approachable. DDS Thurber talked me through the procedure and addressed any concerns that I had. My experience was favorable and I would return to DDS Thurber for future dental work should the need arise.

He thoroughly explained the upcoming procedure, went over all of my son’s intake information and asked us if we had any questions. He really took the time with us to put us at ease. Before leaving the staff member that works with the insurance portion went over what to expect and was very helpful. My son and I feel good about his upcoming surgery. I wish all medical office were like this one. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️+

Fantastic experience: I was in such pain when I was referred to Dr. Thurber and they got me in right away. Everyone in this office had been great. Dr. Thurber explained very clearly at each step of the process and he answered all of my questions and concerns with care and clarity. My calls were returned in very timely manner and I never felt rushed. Emily took time to go over all the insurance details. I am very grateful for the care I’ve received.

Fantastic experience: I have severe anxiety with dentists and had a bad experience somewhere else a few years ago. Dr Thurber was extremely patient with me despite being extremely busy. He made sure I wasn't feeling any pain multiple times throughout the procedure even tho the procedure was very quick. The dental assistant was also extremely kind. I hope I don't need another tooth removed anytime soon but if I do I will definitely be sure to go back here. I will be back in a few months for implants.

He found something on my xray that no other dentist felt was important enough to address. He eased my mind and addressed any concerns I had. The office is beautiful and clean. Everyone was professional and pleasant from check in to check out.
