I’ve had horrible experiences, but I’m so thankful for this place. Update: still pleased with the dental services received at this location. Fantastic experience: Upfront, I was an emergency visit and they were so quick to bring me in. Quite seriously from phone call to chair was 2 hours. The desk staff was so helpful and kind, especially to someone who was terrified of dental care. The intake paperwork was very easy and straightforward, and I was moved to the chair quite quickly. Massive gratitude to the team that provided my care. The work was done with real care, again especially for someone in a lot of pain who was not eager for care. But they were so good and compassionate. Because of how smooth, caring and kind they were, I decided on the spot that Commonwealth Dentistry was going to become my dental office. They are the first dentists I've seen in over 40 years but I'm so glad (in the worst possible circumstances) to have found them. Addendum: 1/30/26 The team at this office continues to be amazing. They have taken someone who was physically terrified of dental visits and, on my most recent visit, actually was able to doze slightly during my procedure. I cannot say it clearly enough: if you need dental care, and especially if you are fearful of it, Dr. Shaw and his team are there for you. Further Addendum, 4/24/26 Across multiple visits for various needs, Dr Shaw and his team have shown amazing compassion. Thanks to their attentive care and great advice, I'm now a confident patient with good dental health. Anyone who needs dental care would be well-served to contact them.

Fantastic experience: I came to CD bc my long term dentist couldn’t fit me in for a missed appointment for another 6months. I was going to get a cleaning then get back in the books for my old dentist office . But CD had such great customer service and availability that I stayed and it’s closer . My most recent visit, the cleaning included a water and picking dual technique. It made my cleaning easier . Teeth felt so good, getting under that back side . I literally felt good. I do recommend to anyone . And the weighted vest , I almost fell asleep. In the summer I go to the ice cream shop as soon as I leave the dentist appointment . It’s right around the corner :)

Fantastic experience: I cannot recommend Dr. Shaw and the entire team at this practice enough. I've already been raving about my experience to friends and family but I have to do it here as well, in the hopes that someone who struggles with going to the dentist sees this and decides to give them a visit. I had an extreme fear and anxiety of going to the dentist, based on some pretty terrible visits to other dentists. It was so bad I had only gone to a dentist 5 times my entire life, and 4 of those were pretty much the worst experiences of my life. I came to the conclusion that I was the problem, and I was just really weak when it came to going to the dentist. I came to Commonwealth Dentistry because it's where my wife started going and she was very impressed with the entire practice, and after my first visit, I was as well. The office is clean and welcoming. The entire staff is professional and polite, and I just felt really safe and heard. Everyone listened when I explained my anxiety and no one brushed it off, which was the case I had experienced in the past. Needless to say, the ENTIRE staff, from top to bottom, was just really awesome. I could tell they just really care, and that's something that's hard to find nowadays. I've had a scaling and root planing, as well as 5 fillings done across 3 visits so far, and my dental anxiety is pretty much gone because of how comfortable they made me feel. I have a few more visits to finish all the work that needs to be done on my teeth, but I'm honestly looking forward to it. I went from refusing to go to the dentist, to looking forward to going back, that's how good these guys are. Thank you to everyone here, y'all are the best!

Let's be honest, nobody loves going to the dentist, but they make the whole experience much more bearable and dare I say, "fun". Rachel and Kelsey, in particular, are a hilarious, dynamic duo. Fantastic experience: Yesterday, May the 6th, I went to Commonwealth for the cleaning of my teeth. I have been to the dentists many times in the last three years because of teeth that had many problems due to the neglect of themwhen I was growing up. Kemara cleaned my teeth as she has done several times in the past year. I can say that the tooth cleaning that I got yesterday from her was the best of my life. Kemara spent a very long time on my teeth and did an exhaustive and meticulous cleaning of them. Truly I was impressed. Then Dr Grant Shaw who is my dentist, and I must say an excellent one, came in and checked them out and gave a good report, which has not been the norm, because of so many teeth problems in the past. MY wife and I enjoy going to Commonwealth. Everybody is nice and professional. Autumn many times takes care of our appointments and she is funny and friendly I cannot recommend Commonwealth Dentistry enough. Jose Alvarez

Fantastic experience: Rachael is an excellent hygienist. Dr. Shaw appears to be very engaged as a dentist. I've been a patient at Commonwealth Dentistry for several years. I'm new to the office in Mechanicsville though, so I looks forward to many years of thorough care from both Rachael & Dr. Shaw.

Negative experience: I took my 30 year old son with autism in for sedation dentistry. He had not seen a dentist for over a decade. We were taken back promptly which was nice. He had his xray and we were told the issue was his wisdom teeth and we'd have to schedule that with an oral surgeon. We should have left at that point, but I figured once we were there we might as well stay. The anesthesiologist put him under and I left the room. During the 2 hours he was back there I was called back to show my credit card and pay 3 different times. We had agreed that they would fill any cavities but the second time I went back I was told we would have to come back for one of the fillings and asked to sign papers for that. When I asked why they said it MIGHT need a root canal. But it might not? I asked. I did not think I could get my son to come back and I wanted that done so I pushed. It did not need a root canal. I was then called back a third time to give my credit card. At the end, while my 200 pound son was still barely coming out of the anesthesia, they pulled a wheel chair up to him and put him in it. At that point the anesthesiologist asked for my credit card again and charged me in 10 minute increments. They drove him out to the car and I had to lift him in. He was not given a chance to wake up. I wasn't given the opportunity to wait an find out if he was ok. We were just shuttled away. I'm sure the work they did was excellent. I'm sure the cost was standard. I'm sure the protocol was normal, but it all felt very uncomfortable and somewhat rude. Like a money making assembly line. My son was scared of the process to start with and after this he won't return.

The Dentist was so kind and professional, in all my years of going to the dentist I’ve NEVER had a Dentist spend more than 90 seconds with me. The office is decorated very nice and very clean. They have the most update equipment. 10 out of 10 I would DEFINITELY RECOMMEND.
