Positive experience: West dental care at west portal dental is top tier. My only complaint is mostly industry wide. Not All, but most dent techs and docs seem to think it is their duty to scold and lecture and even browbeat their patients about proper dental care," But did you floss?!?!" I don't pay people to abuse me, so I always spot tgis attitude cold. I notify bad actors that they can report, advise, and even caution, but as a paying customer I will not be talked down to, or belittled. This has happened less at west portal dental than any other place I have h a d service, I appreciate the mutual respect.

Positive experience: I want to thank my new hygienist, Maria, for cleaning my teeth, as it's a pain-free teeth cleaning ever. She was gentle and thoughtful making sure no liquid buildup in my mouth while cleaning my teeth. No sandy feel in my mouth at all. Maria definitely deserves a 5-star rating! However, my husband and son both had a same new hygienist, not Maria. They both had an unpleasant experience this time as they felt this new hygienist rushed to clean their teeth. They hope next time to have Maria to clean their teeth.

Positive experience: I'm glad Dr. Wang detected an infection and recommended that I see a periodontist. Unfortunately the one they referred me to was out of my network so I had to look for one on my own, but I'm very happy with Dr. Ho from Faces of the Mission. She deftly performed gum surgery. I wished West Portal had asked me where to send a prescription for Peridex. Instead of paying $19 to them, I could have paid only $5 co-pay at the Kaiser Pharmacy. I didn't appreciate that. I hope in the future they ask me where to send prescriptions.

Positive experience: My first visit was overall okay, though I left feeling a bit disappointed given the very strong reviews. My appointment was scheduled for 1:00 PM, but I wasn’t seen until about 30 minutes later. The X-rays and cleaning took close to two hours, which felt quite long. There were several interruptions along the way, including missing or malfunctioning equipment, repeat X-ray images because the first ones weren’t taken correctly, stretches where no one was in the room, and the dentist needing to return after forgetting a step. Toward the end, I asked for a sip of water before the fluoride treatment because my throat was extremely dry after the long appointment and knowing I wouldn’t be able to drink for 30 minutes afterward. Instead of being given water to drink, the hygienist sprayed water into my mouth, which felt uncomfortable and dismissive. I plan to return since the office is conveniently located near my apartment and they already have my X-rays, but I did leave feeling a bit underwhelmed. I’m hoping future visits will be smoother, quicker, and more professional.

Fantastic experience: I never thought I would have a lovely experience at the dentist then I met Dr. Leila Jamshidi, she is wonderful. I had very bad anxiety about going to the dentist, I knew I needed to get a cleaning, between finding someone that would take Delta Dental insurance, deal with my extreme anxiety and someone I felt I could trust, I thought it was impossible. Everyone that works there is warm and welcoming, it is clear they want you to feel comfortable. I am so thankful to have found them!

Fantastic experience: I developed a dental semi-emergency; I would have pain when chewing. Dr. Wang’s office was nice enough to make time and scheduled me for an emergency appointment. Dr. Wangs evaluated my problems and gave me a detailed explanation of the sources for my pain. She then explained the best corrective measures to eliminate my discomforts when chewing. I am grateful for her help and for making the time to see me. JW

Negative experience: The condescending nature of the the front desk team is the last straw. I get bills and quotes for one price and then a bill for a larger amount. You are no longer MetLife preferred. The best dentist that was there left. I can not believe the the back and the forth between the dentist and the hygienist like they had never worked together before. Nothing about this facility inspire confidence or reassurance.

I have significant dental anxiety and struggle with certain tools like xrays, and everyone I’ve worked with has been very understanding and taken steps to make sure I’m comfortable during appointments. I’d highly recommend West Portal Dental Care to anyone, but especially if you haven’t been to the dentist in a while and are afraid to go back. The location of the office is also convenient and accessible from public transit.

Positive experience: I was welcomed in once I arrived but since I was 10 minutes early, I used their restroom. The dentist, Dr. Wang, and her staff were all very friendly. It was a short visit, since she just needed to fill one tooth in the front of my mouth, but I felt like she was being extra cautious since she needed to keep going back with the drill. I felt not much pain at all, since she had injected a pain killer, but it just felt like she kept claiming, 'just one more little spot' like three times. Nonetheless, she did a great job and I'm quite happy with my smile. It was a good experience!

Negative experience: PSA: Accepting your insurance is not the same as being in-network with your insurance plan. Make sure you know the difference — and that your provider clearly explains it before your visit. When I moved back to the city, I was looking forward to returning to this office for my routine visits. Unfortunately, my first (and only) visit back was disappointing. Having experience in dental offices and understanding how insurance works, I know that saying “we accept your insurance” and “we’re in-network with your insurance” are two completely different statements. It’s incredibly misleading and negligent for a practice to confirm the former, only to clarify the truth after services have been rendered. As patients, we need to take responsibility for verifying that our providers are in-network. But it’s equally important for office staff to practice transparency and communicate this clearly from the start.

Fantastic experience: My first visit. I was greeted very warmly by all of the team. They were very thorough in getting the new patient information before I arrived so they all were very ready for me. A very important item for me is the VERY clear communication from everyone. They made sure I understood the process they follow, thoroughly discussed all procedures and made sure I understood what insurance covered and what I was responsible for with details on amounts and timing. I've already recommended West Seattle Dental to a family member.

Fantastic experience: Happy to have found a great new dentist in West Portal

Negative experience: I was in extreme pain from an infection and doctor said she placed order for antibiotic to be picked up. She said she was calling in the order right after my appointment at 4pm. By 8pm, Walgreens hadn’t received it and I had to go to another dentist and go through (and pay for) another exam in order to get the antibiotic prescription. At 9:30pm, I got a notification from Walgreens that the order had just been placed by your dentist. By that time I had already picked up the medication from the pharmacy from the 2nd dentist I went to. It was very frustrating because the receptionist at your office confirmed twice with me before your office closed at 5pm, that the order had been placed when in fact it wasn’t placed until after 9pm!

Fantastic experience: Jana (dental hygienist) was very meticulous, thorough, and careful throughout the cleaning. It was evident she takes great pride in her work and was open to constructive feedback. West Portal Dental is all the better with her on their team.

Fantastic experience: I needed a cleaning before a medical procedure. They were booked but put me on a list and called a few days later with 3 appointment options. Could not be happier with responsiveness and care and cleanliness and quality of the personalized service. They are Delta Dental PPO providers! Many thanks! Follow-up: my dental coverage changed but the care was seamless and again outstanding for both a cleaning and examination. Follow-up. Needed a small filling, completed in 20 minutes, with no pain. Great, friendly, and extremely competent office in every respect. Follow-up August 2025. Had a cleaning again and then a crown replaced. The office staff remains very professional, efficient, and attentive. I am impressed that they have adopted all the new technology---x-rays, virtual imaging for the permanent crown replacement, and the office remains very clean and well-maintained. Couldn't be happier! Follow-up September 2025. First crown replacement didn’t fit appropriately so temporary reinstalled awaiting new crown. Temporary crown fractured and practice got me in immediately for new temporary—all the staff very responsive and communicative and efficient.

Fantastic experience: Finding a new dentist can be stressful, but I’m so glad I found Dr. Wang at West Portal Dental. I came in for a deep cleaning and fillings, and Dr. Wang and her team were amazing from start to finish. Everyone was warm, professional, and attentive, which made me feel comfortable right away. Dr. Wang is so detail oriented and caring, she really put me at ease throughout the whole process. Highly recommend them!

And now, as of July (2025), the practice features Dr. Leila Jamshidi, yet another master of technique. More. She has a talent that is rare in "white-coat" professionals, especially dentists. Starting with a rock-solid foundation of superb technical knowledge and excellent "bedside-manners," her confident, empathetic and relaxed manner explain a quiet ability to reduce, nearly eliminate, anxiety. We have good one here. The best.

Raquel was super helpful and worked with me to schedule an appointment that worked for me and explained my insurance coverage and copays in detail so there were no surprises. Fantastic experience: It’s always nerve wracking to start with a new dentist, but I made a great choice when I moved to West Portal. I had my first appt this week and I was impressed. X-rays, measuring of gum pockets, assessment and recommendations were all done professionally and gently. I’m having my teeth cleaned next week. That will be the real test for me—I have extremely sensitive teeth, but I also like a deep and thorough cleaning. My hunch is that it will be a positive experience.

Negative experience: After a very positive visit while Dr. Mathai was still at this practice, I recently returned for the six-month cleaning that had been scheduled by my prior hygienist. The new hygienist mentioned during the cleaning that the practice was now led by a new dentist, and the dentist briefly introduced herself at the end of my visit. A couple of weeks later, I was shocked to learn that my insurance had been billed for a full dental exam, though I did not receive one and was not aware that one had been booked in the first place. During our minute-long interaction, the dentist did not perform a gum check, reference my past exam notes, or complete any of the activities that would normally characterize a dental exam or that meet the definition of an exam provided by my insurance company. West Portal Dental Care is either being intentionally dishonest or has experienced a shocking decline in quality of care. I learned via Yelp reviews that Dr. Mathai has now moved to a new practice, Lands End Dental, and encourage former patients to follow her there.

Positive experience: New dentist in new dental hygienist they were very, very nice, but my cleaning was not nearly as good as it has been in the past

Negative experience: When Dr. Mathai was here, she provided me with a treatment plan and even mentioned that some of the services on the plan were available at this office. However, after she left, I was never notified—I only found out when I reached out myself. Over the past few months, I have been in communication with the office regarding the services I wanted to get done. I scheduled an appointment later this month, despite my already tight schedule. However, when I arrived at the office, there was clear confusion. The staff attempted to proceed with treatments I had specifically requested not to do. Additionally, the new doctor informed me that she was unable to perform the primary service I had booked the appointment for. While I completely understand if that service is unavailable, I’m frustrated that this was not communicated to me beforehand. I had both emailed and confirmed with the front desk over the phone about what I needed, yet my time was wasted, and no one even reached out to apologize. This is extremely unprofessional and disappointing.

Negative experience: I’ve been seeing Dr. Mathai at West Portal Dental for many years. At my appointment today a different dentist walked in and proceeded with the appointment barely introducing herself and trying to persuade me to agree to procedures that I was not interested in. I was never notified that my original dentist had left the business. They claimed to have sent emails and letters, but this is something that should have been communicated when I made my appointment and when I arrived to the office. Extremely disappointed in this business and their failure to prioritize their patients relationship with their provider.

Fantastic experience: Great experience at this clinic. Very thorough with cleaning, offered topical numbing free of charge after the hygienist noticed discomfort. Cleaning process was much longer compared to other clinics across the street, who appear to be churning out volume of appointments. Highly recommend, but book your appointments well in advance as they get booked up quickly

Negative experience: Avoid going here. I had a filling on my side of the tooth placed by this incompetent dentist and it fell off a month later. Dentist does not want to take responsibility and wants to charge me again to fill it. Avoid this dentist.

Fantastic experience: I am a fearful, terrible dental patient. I've had negative experiences with two local places and then visited a dentistry that specializes in patients like myself, which was quite costly. I tried West Portal Dental Care several years ago and was very comfortable from the first visit. Yes, I still take something before an appointment. But Dr. Mathai and her team make sure I'm ok during the most basic cleaning to getting a crown. Dr. Mathai is reputable and doesn't recommend unnecessary procedures to increase her profits like Dr. Aliabadi at Pro Dental Care. I will be forever grateful to have found Dr. Mathai and her team.

And one of my favorite things is that they communicate via text (email as well) for appointments so it's really easy to work with them on scheduling or finding a slot that opens up when you need something quick. Fantastic experience: I was greeted by friendly and professional staff at the front desk who checked me in and confirmed my procedure. The clinical staff was excellent. Attentive, careful, gentle and understanding. They guided me through X-rays, taking two impressions as I am preparing for a crown to go on my implant and they carefully explained each step. The dentist tended to me as well with an examination of the implant and another lower impression. I was instructed to make an appointment in a few weeks to attach the crown which is being fabricated in a dental lab. Everyone communicated clearly, tended to my needs and performed their respective tasks with confidence and knowledge. I was very pleased with my visit and the level of care I received.

Fantastic experience: I've been going to the clinic for a few years now and have had very good experiences. Admin staff are very kind and efficient. I have very sensitive gums and TMJ and the dental hygienists have always been very careful and kind. Dr. Mathai is incredibly skilled and knowledgeable, thoughtful and kind. I barely feel anything when I've had fillings, she explains everything, and she's very conscientious about my jaw and medical history. (I didn't have a great experience with Dr. Gonzalez when he covered for her, maybe he treats his patients better, but was in and out with very little information provided, not helpful with a mouth guard issue).

Great energy in the office, wonderful wonderful wonderful staff, I am so happy. During the times she’s not available, Dr. Gonzales is also knowledgeable and helpful. Overall great practice! It’s also pretty accessible via bus and in a nice part of the city.

Fantastic experience: April 5, 2023 This is my first visit at West Portal Dental. I am very impressed with Dr. Mathai and all her staff. Not only was everyone professional and transparent but more importantly, they were all kind, attentive, and very helpful. I am very grateful to have stumbled upon this amazing dental practice! April 12, 2023 I just had my first cleanIng in 5 years. As you probably have suspected I had plaque build-up. I am 73 years old and this is the first time I have not experienced at least some discomfort!!! And that is with a broken tooth!!! AMAZING!!! Absolutely, amazing!!! Thank you so much for such a positive cleaning experience.

Fantastic experience: Dr. Rosa Mathai is the best dentist I have ever encountered in my entire life, and let me assure you - I've known quite a few since my dental problems are never ending. She is always very accommodating, listens to you carefully, takes time to assess the damage but finds a solution quickly. When she is presented with a problem her solution is always the less painful, more effective one. I really enjoy her professionalism! Many thanks from the bottom of my heart.

Fantastic experience: Dr. Mathai did everything she could to fix my crown! It wasn’t just a simple recementing that would take less than 30 minutes, it was her expertise on making sure that it fit properly and that I was comfortable at all times! Took us much longer than expected and she wanted to make sure it was perfect before letting me leave the office!

Negative experience: Both my wife and I came to West Portal dental care with high hope of receiving great care. Indeed, Dr. Mathais is a skilled and caring dentist. When she is not available, her substitute is much less so. He is insensitive to the discomfort of his clients/patients. Both of us had the same experience. His manner of providing dental care was perfunctory and cold. he did not go the extra steps to ensure his patients were comfortable . It seemed he just wanted to hurry and get the work done. Did not seem to concern himself, if we felt pain, or had a hard time breathing because we had a mouth full of water, and dental instruments. We both decided that we would seek treatment elsewhere.

Fantastic experience: Dr. Mathai and staff are careful, communicative and efficient. I'm so glad I found a dentist in a location convenient to my workplace and where street parking is relatively easy to find, too!
