Fantastic experience: On April 13, I took my father-in-law, Jack, a Korean War veteran who was 92 at the time and has since turned 93, to Brookside Dental in Gresham for his first visit with Dr. Robert Kowal and his team. I waited until May 6 to write this because I wanted to let the experience settle. It was that rare. From the moment we walked in, I sensed a different kind of culture in this office. On the way in, Jack had cut his finger, and before we were even focused on the dental appointment, the front desk team responded with such kindness and calm attention that you would have thought we had come in just for that. They immediately helped with bandages and care, without making it feel like an inconvenience. At one point, Jack’s walker was blocking the door leading back into the office. A gentleman stood there patiently, smiling gently, with no sense of hurry or irritation. I later realized that was Dr. Robert Kowal returning from lunch. That small moment said a lot. Our hygienist, Deb, was exceptional. I do not say that lightly. She was professional, intelligent, warm, calm, and deeply genuine. She helped with sterile supplies for Jack’s finger without hesitation, and then carried that same level of care into the dental visit itself. She was never rushed. She connected with Jack as a person, not just as a patient. As someone who works in the medical and psychiatry field, and as someone who values genuine human connection, I recognize when care is real. Deb has that rare quality. The entire visit felt like we had walked into an office of people we had somehow known for years, yet everything remained highly professional. Dr. Kowal and the team knew exactly what they were doing clinically, but what stood out was the way they treated Jack, with patience, dignity, humor, and genuine interest. This was not a rushed appointment. It was a true getting-to-know-you experience, paired with excellent dental care. At one point I stepped out of the exam room and had a chance to visit with Dr. Kowal. That kind of personal connection is something I have almost never experienced in a dental or medical office. Even the other patients coming and going seemed relaxed and happy. You could tell this was not just special treatment for us; this appears to be the culture of the entire office. I have rarely, if ever, witnessed this level of care in any healthcare setting. Brookside Dental, Dr. Kowal, Deb, and the entire team modeled what healthcare should feel like: competent, calm, warm, respectful, and deeply human. This was far more than a good dental visit. It was one of the most unique and meaningful healthcare experiences I have witnessed. My father-in-law felt the same. Brookside Dental has created something truly special, and I hope the team knows how valuable and rare that is.

Fantastic experience: I had my first appointment with Brookside this week. My mouth is a disaster as far as I am concerned and they did an impeccable job making me feel comfortable and without judgement. The hygienist, Deb, was amazing. She educated me on how to improve my oral health and provided a list of products they recommend to sustain and fix some of the issues going on - all of which were inexpensive! Dr Kowal was jovial and kind... I will have many many more appointments to fix my mouth and for the first time in a long time, I am not nervous about going back to the dentist! Update to add - I have now been to see Dr Kowal many times in the last few months and must say this is the best dental experience I have ever had, they are kind, funny and a judgement free zone! So happy to be working with Brookside Dental to fix my smile! Thank you guys so much!!

Fantastic experience: Dr Rob and Shasta were amazing in their care of my Dad. My Dad has dementia so getting him around at Dr visits can be trying because he can't really explain what's bothering him or what hurts at times. Shasta saw that he was a little chilly and got him a blanket to keep warm. He's also has severe hearing loss, and Shasta was accommodating to where I could use his hearing aid system while she did her portion of the exam. Dr Rob was very thorough, caring, and kind throughout the exam. If there were questions, he would take the time to answer them and make sure that you understood everything.

Everyone there has a smile on their face, they are very welcoming and I honestly am so happy I found this dental office. There's not enough nice things I could say about this place. I'm impressed! Thank you all for being your awesome selves. I'm still in shock that I've finally found a dentist office that is everything one should be. Dr. Kowal and his staff are so nice, professional, welcoming and helpful. They actually I believe care about their patients. They even gave me the science behind (educated me) on my oral issues. The atmosphere is clean and warm. They were also very thorough.

Negative experience: I had a great experience while there for my appointment dental assistants were great, so was dentist. However, after I had a cavity filled at my appointment, it was painful. My tooth while I had the cavity did not hurt, did not cause any sensitivity, the procedure was done for more cosmetic purposes and to prevent from getting worse. After the cavity was filled a couple days later I noticed it hurt to chew on the side that I had the cavity, I also noticed it was now sensitive to hot and cold foods. Still, no big deal things happen and don’t go as planned always. However when I called the office back after about two weeks after the cavity was filled, I spoke with Trish at the office. She told me unless the cavity was waking me up out of my sleep I shouldn’t be concerned, she stated her own filled cavities hurt months after and it was normal. She said the doctor was out and I would need to go to their Clackamas office if I wanted an appointment within the next two weeks. I felt dismissed and I would warn any others from getting dental work done at this office.

Fantastic experience: This is a warm-spirited dental clinic, and Trisha makes one feel comfortable from the very start. I knew Shawna, the hygenist, from our now retired dentist. I followed her here to Brookside Dental. Shawna's friendly, kind and very diligent in her work without it hurting. Then, I was very pleased to meet Dr. Kowal, who is also a kind hearted person He has state of the art xrays and a camera for the inside of the mouth. He showed me the inherent problems in my mouth without ever making me feel badly about the situation. I will gladly be returning here again.

It’s not easy to say you enjoy going to the dentist, but I can honestly say I feel relaxed and well taken care of here. I'm walking on a thin line saying this, but I enjoy coming here more than my barbershop!

The dentist and staff are very friendly and professional, which goes a long way toward my liking this office, but the dental work I've received so far has been top-notch, too. I've been to many dentists in the various places where I've lived, but this is my favorite by far. I highly recommend this dental office!

Fantastic experience: I couldn’t recommend a dentist more than Brookside dental in Gresham. I have feared the dentist my whole life. Avoiding any appointments that were not just for cleaning. Never following up or following through with the dental plan. That led to me needing a lot of dental work. This is the first time I have ever gone to the dentist without canceling an appointment. I’ve been there four times in the last two months to stay on plan. The doctor and staff are all amazing from the time you walk in the door until you leave. They have sense of humor they make you comfortable and your care is obvious number one priority.

Fantastic experience: I was currently without a dentist and had part of a tooth detach. Found Brookside Dental had great reviews and was close to my home. Tricia scheduled me for an exam within an hour of my call. Dr Kowal determined a crown was in order and I am scheduled for next Monday. Office is very clean and organized. Dentist and his assistant Glenda, and Tricia are very nice. A very welcoming feeling, everyone has great personalities. Looks like I found my new dentist!!! Returned to Brookside Dental for my second crown today. Trisha greeted me as I walked in, and immediately was escorted to the dental chair. Shasta and Dr Kowal worked as a skilled team to numb, remove old crown, and prep for the temporary new crown. Very gentle yet professionally accomplished. I feel like I am family when I hear about their lives while asking me about mine. Warm personalities throughout. Highly recommend!!

Fantastic experience: I came in for my first appointment and was very pleased with this visit. The staff (Dr. Kowal, Trisha, and Shasta) seemed thoroughly invested in the patient experience and answering questions that I had. Office is very bright, clean and inviting; looking forward to getting my teeth back in top shape.

Fantastic experience: Friendly, Professional and makes you feel at home. Nobody likes going to the dentist, but the staff at Brookside Dental make it less traumatizing. As luck would have it, I cracked a tooth 2 days after my regular appointment, Dr Rob called me personally, asked a few questions and after we determined that it could wait until after the weekend, made me an appointment to come in and get it looked at to determine if I needed a crown or the dreaded root canal. At my appointment we got it fixed and a temporary put in place. Quick easy and relatively no pain. He even called me later to check on me. If you are tired of assembly line dentistry and are ready to have that personal touch when you open up for a cleaning, give Brookside Dental & Dr Rob a call.

Fantastic experience: Dr Koval and the team at Brookside Dental are the best! Dr Koval talks you through the procedure no matter how simple or complex. The running commentary takes a lot of the anxiety of shots and drills in your mouth away. The team also has a very gentle approach so the soreness and pain following any kind of work is minimal. I always recommend Brookside to all my friends and family.

Fantastic experience: Dr Koval and his staff are terrific at keeping you informed in all aspects of my dental care from front office appointments and billing, the hygienist cleaning my teeth to his assistant and Dr Koval himself. They all listen to me as a patient and adjust according to my concerns. I generally have dental anxiety and Dr Koval is really intuitive in keeping me calm.
