Experiencia negativa: I work as a dental assistant and I came to see Dr. Nielson to examine a hole in my gum that came from a popcorn kernel piercing the tissue about 5 months ago. When he came in, the first thing he did was put on a mask, gloves and glasses, then he proceeds to rub his eye with the same gloves he used to examine my mouth. I didnt really say anything because I am a people pleaser to the extreme. It just so happened that I got two canker sores a couple days later where he touched the inside of my lips by the way. Then, he proceeds to perio probe and got five and six millimeter pockets depths all around my mouth. If you don't know what that means, 1-3 mm is considered healthy, meaning 5-6 is periodontal disease territory. I was very confused as I had just gotten a cleaning at my office 2-3 months prior and there were no concerns. I brought this up with the office i work at (2 hygienists, 2 assistants, and 2 general dentists) and they gave me the same look like "No...that isnt right". One of the hygienists perio probed me again and got 1-3 mm and 4 mm near that area where I had the hole in my gums. He didnt even zero in on that area with the hole, he didn't even address it, then he had me schedule a deep cleaning with their hygienist to take care of the "periodontal disease". After I brought this up with my office, I canceled the cleaning and went to another periodontist at a different location who gave me a completely different opinion and did a gingevectomy instead. I wouldnt trust this location again, maybe a different doctor, but not Dr. Nielson. Suspicious.

Experiencia fantástica: I’ve had two pretty intense procedures here and couldn’t be more happy. The staff is friendly and professional. Billing is transparent and simple. And I can’t go on enough about Dr Braden. He is exceptional. I wish he could be my doctor for everything. But he can’t.

Experiencia negativa: Dr Atkins is great and was highly recommended. The front office and financing department struggles in communication and lacks any shred of compassion. I will compliment them on their ability to collect money. My fiancé had to get a front tooth pulled, bone graft placed, root form implant placed, temp crown for 4 months and then a permeant crown to finish her situation. With her "affordable" insurance, this was multiple thousands out of pocket. Her insurance situation is of no fault to this office. What stood out most was the lack or flexibility or compassion when discussing payment options. Given the high cost, she was hoping for some willingness to work with her, but that didn't seem to be the case. This made an already stressful situation even more frustrating. Dental procedures are not just medical-they're a financial decision too, and patients deserve transparency along with understanding. The policy she was given for a payment option was rigid. Not everyone fits into a set policy. The office does not understand or exercise any options of flexibility depending on an individual's situation....so be prepared. She was advised that after the bone graft healed for 4 months (this means a soft food diet during the 120+ days) a permanent crown would be placed. What was not communicated, was the fact that she would need to go to another dentist to have the crown placed. Dr Atkins does not do this. Imagine scraping by to meet the demands of paying over $3300 out of pocket, changing your diet to meet healing demands only to be told at the end of 4 months that more money and more time is needed for the final result, but find somewhere else to go for this. "Sorry, we don't do that here.". What's general knowledge in the front office at Utah Peri Specialists (South Jordan) is not general knowledge to the general public. Yes, she was forced to sign an estimated treatment plan. This did itemize things. It's one thing to see a sheet of paper with overwhelming medical terminology and many dollar signs. It's another thing for someone that knows this language to break things down and clarify the process of a major procedure. That is not too much to ask. It's a simple task to eliminate a huge negative impact of someone's quality of life. Dr Atkins has taken the Hippocratic Oath and honors this. A patient's well-being is not top priority for those on the front line in the South Jordan office or those in their financial dept.

Experiencia negativa: I was overcharged for a procedure that my dental insurance said I should not have been charged full price for. I tried to get reasoning from these guys of why I was over charged. They'd just say that in the state of Utah they can charge you full price. Which my insurance said they couldn't. They refused to refund me. My insurance had to call them multiple times to explain to them why they can not charge me full price. They ignored me and would not work with me. Took a year for them to refund me after my insurance called and talked to them. They still did not refund me the full price. Their office manager and finance people are not kind and will not work with you. They wouldn't call me back or would continue to say they were busy. I feel they should be investigated for insurance fraud.

The dental hygienist was amazing and extremely patient while I was on a hold call with Medicare, who ended up hanging up on me after holding for 40 minutes! I’ve been going to this office for several years and everyone in the office is professional and kind. Dr. Nielsen is fantastic and I always know I’m in good hands and he treats me fairly. The office is exceptionally clean and I appreciate everything they do. Thank you!

The office staff is amazing and will walk you through billing, insurance charges, etc. so you have a clear expectation of cost before the procedure.

Experiencia negativa: The doctor was amazing but their billing office is a joke! We paid amount quoted in full day of the procedure. Got a bill saying we still owed over $200 8 months after the procedure. After several phone calls with the office and then having to call my insurance several times I was notified by our insurance company that the office had submitted the codes incorrectly. Rather than attempting to fix the situation the billing office said they would contact my insurance company and get back to me. Ended up not hearing anything for another 3 months and then was called and told they would be charging finance charges on the remaining balance. We are now 18 months out from the original procedure still trying to fight the office to fix their original mistake. I would definitely find another office if you have options!

He explained what was wrong and why he would pursue the treatment he had in mind in the ways he would do it. He also answered all of the many questions I had as I tried to wrap my brain around what the underlying problems were and why other periodontists might do things differently. I felt very informed to make my decisions after talking with him. He also offered me a time-saving option at no charge that I wouldn't have done if not for this offer. It is obvious he really cares about each patient and wants to do his best by them.

Experiencia negativa: Called before I went in for a periodontal exam. Was advised I was in network. Completed the exam then proceeded to tell me I wasn’t in network, so I went to another provider that was in network. I get a statement two months later for an exam they said was covered. I paid the bill, $170 wasn’t worth the hassle, but had to leave a review, so hopefully this doesn’t happen to you. Got me in there by saying they were in network and wasn’t and also told me the exam was covered. Nice people, but wouldn’t recommend them to anyone. Hopefully this helps you make a decision.
