Fantastic experience: If all you need or want is a very basic cleaning, then almost who cares where you go? Those of us with other dental work needs will learn that the quality of care and knowledge here is second to none in the entire Pittsburgh metro area. I’ve looked, for years, and there isn’t any better. I’ve been very pleased (as much as you can with dental work) with the consistent professional high quality care I’ve received.

Fantastic experience: I experience significant anxiety when visiting the dentist, as past experiences have often been uncomfortable and stressful. However, my experience at Hartwood Dental Associates has been exceptional. The entire team is welcoming, professional, and attentive, creating a truly comfortable environment. Dr. Bonczek and his staff go above and beyond to ensure patient comfort, and their care has made a meaningful difference in my experience. For the first time, I feel at ease during dental visits. Dr. Bonczek also recommended Invisalign, and I am very excited about the progress so far. I am truly grateful to him and his team for their outstanding care and for making each visit a positive experience. I definitely recommend Dr. Bonczek and his staff at Hartwood Dental Associates.

Negative experience: I have been a patient at Hartwood Dental Associates for nearly four years, and for the past two years I’ve been bringing my son with me to appointments. During that time, the entire staff—from the front desk, to the dental hygienists, to Dr. Brian Bonczek—have always been pleasant with my son and have interacted with him kindly. Because of that, I have always felt comfortable bringing him with me to my visits. Unfortunately, my experience today was extremely disappointing and quite shocking. When Dr. Brian Bonczek came into the room, I was told that I could no longer bring my two-year-old son back with me and that in the future I should either leave him in the waiting room or find a babysitter. This was the first time I had ever heard of this rule. When I scheduled the appointment, I specifically tried to arrange back-to-back appointments for my husband and me so that one of us could watch our son while the other was being seen, but that option was not available. The scheduling staff also knew that I would be bringing my two-year-old with me, and no one mentioned any policy about children not being allowed in the treatment area. Given that they were aware of my situation, including the fact that I am pregnant and caring for a toddler, this is something that absolutely should have been communicated to me prior to my appointment, not while I was already in the chair having my teeth examined. What made the situation even more upsetting was the way it was handled. I have never had a negative interaction with Dr. Brian Bonczek before, but today felt completely different. When I mentioned that perhaps I should consider finding dental care elsewhere, his response was dismissive and essentially said, “yeah, maybe you should,” which I found incredibly unprofessional. If policies have changed, that is understandable, but they should be communicated clearly and respectfully ahead of time. Springing that information on a patient mid-appointment—especially a pregnant mother with a toddler—is not the appropriate way to handle it. One thing I will still give the office credit for is their dental hygienists. They have always been excellent, and I have consistently had positive experiences with them. The front desk staff also used to be very warm and welcoming, though in the past few months I have noticed a shift in the overall demeanor and morale of the office. Their website also advertises pediatric care, which makes this interaction even more confusing. After today’s experience, I personally would not feel comfortable bringing my child here. Based on how this situation was handled, I would strongly recommend looking into other dental offices if you are searching for dental care.

Positive experience: Dr. Brian is far more interested in selling Invisalign than giving general care. He needs to pick a lane in his dentistry. Gene is amazing though.

Positive experience: While I think this may be a good dentist for adults, it was not a great experience for me and my toddler. It’s advertised that they do pediatric dentistry, but it seems that only applies to older kids (10+ would be my rec). They asked me to wait in the waiting room instead of going back with my 3 year old (I insisted on going back), couldn’t do a thorough cleaning of his teeth despite commenting frequently on how tolerant he was for his age, and asked strange questions like if he drinks coffee. It was clear they were not used to having a patient his age, and I wish some one would’ve raised that to me when I scheduled the appointment. I’ve been to pediatric dentists before who had kid oriented chairs, tools, and distractions to help ease the experience for younger kids and this office had none. It’s possible my experience would’ve been more positive with an older kid or as an adult, but I think they should reconsider advertising that they do pediatric dentistry in this office.

Fantastic experience: I can’t say enough good things about Hartwood Dental and Dr. Brian! From the moment you walk in, the staff makes you feel completely welcome — incredibly kind, down-to-earth, and genuinely friendly. What really stood out to me is how non-judgmental they are. If you’re not flossing twice a day every single day (let’s be honest, most of us aren’t), they don’t make you feel guilty or lecture you. Instead, they give helpful, honest advice without any shame or pressure. They also never try to upsell you on whitening, Invisalign, or other add-ons — which is so refreshing. You always feel like their priority is your dental health, not your wallet. Dr. Brian is thorough, gentle, and explains everything clearly. Highly recommend Hartwood Dental to anyone looking for a relaxed, honest, and professional dental experience.

Negative experience: Extremely disappointed in this Dentist and moreover this practice…..I do not recommend using them. I needed an emergency root canal and this practice COMPLETELY missed it even though I specifically cited that my crown was hurting……turns out the crown that I had installed there a couple of years ago wasn’t properly installed and now I had to drill 3 holes for a root canal through a brand new porcelain crown. I would find another dentist other than this one……it’s been a revolving door of dentists for the last several years. Just checking through the reviews I see the owner has been doing some suppression of reviews.

Fantastic experience: The office has a relaxed atmosphere with wonderfully kind staff who make you feel at ease. Exceptionally clean office as well! Dr. Brian and his team exceeded my expectations for my initial appointment!

Fantastic experience: Okay, so I have a lot of issues with grinding at night and it’s been wearing my teeth down. My hygienist, Joy, was a magician. Months back, she was warning me about my teeth shifting around from clenching and grinding. To be honest, I should’ve listened because she was spot on. She got me in for another cleaning and helped me pick out a solution for my grinding issues. Sleeping with a nightguard now, thank God! So much nicer! Anyway, the dentist was super cool too. Very professional. I even got to practice my spanish with the dental assistant. I really liked the whole vibe. Best of all, I’m happy to finally not have any anxiety about going to the dentist!!

Negative experience: Rude just trying to schedule over the phone.

Negative experience: Nothing to get too excited about. They really push additional services like whitening, invisalign,... While I understand that is where they make a lot of money, after I decline multiple times they should get the message. Additionally, last time I went for a regular cleaning and exam, the dentist wasn't even there. Was never notified. They wasted my time. Update: Can I give 0 stars? Dr. Brian's unprofessionalism is amazing. If you have an option on the main office line (press 4) to reach you after hours and then you get mad that someone does that, you shouldn't give the option to reach you after hours. Stay away!

Fantastic experience: The entire staff of Hartwood Dental Associates is wonderful. They were able to get me seen on short notice, and got me antibiotics for an abscess tooth, and whirled with my schedule to get me in for an extraction. I felt comfortable and taken care of the entire time. Dr. Brian made sure that I was completely numb and my procedure was quick and painless. Thank you all!!

Fantastic experience: I was very impressed with the care and courtesy extended from the front desk personnel to the hygienist to Dr. Bonczek. The hygienist ( I can't remember her name unfortunately) was excellent as she examined my teeth and proceeded to clean them ( explaining as she went along and the areas to watch) I was extremely impressed as I listened to Dr. Bonczek speak to a child in the next room. Prior to working on this child he engaged in a conversation about school and activities. As a former teacher I found this to be empowering for the child. In addition this demonstrated respect for the individual regardless of age. When he came to greet me he also engaged in conversation prior to his examination of my teeth and he answered questions I had very thoroughly. In conclusion after relocating to the Pittsburgh area from out of state, I have secured an excellent dental provider.

Fantastic experience: I had somewhat of a dental emergency, however, I already was very interested in this practice as a new patient. Everyone from the front desk, and each person that I encountered, which would’ve been 4 total, treated me with courtesy efficiency, and took care of everything that I needed. I’m looking forward to continuing with my dental healthcare in this practice.

Fantastic experience: Hartwood Dental Associates takes all the fear and guilt out of going to the dentist. Their positive attitudes are very proactive to promoting good dental hygiene. The scheduling is flexible, and they will keep you notified of openings if you are looking for a last-minute appointment. The technology they use has enabled me to see the condition of my teeth like never before. Very clean and very friendly.

Fantastic experience: I was not gifted with the best set of teeth. My whole life it was much of a concern for me ,and many trips to the dentist to maintain my teeth. As I got Older my teeth conditions worsened , so I meet with Hartwood Dental Associates to discuss my dental problems, and they put a plan together to improve my Dental Health and my appearance of my teeth. After much effort and thought a plan was put together to help me gain good dental health ,and to achieve a confident appearance with a smile. Fantastic experience: My first visit to see Dr. Brian was for a toothache. I was able to get a quick appointment, and complete my intake paperwork online. The office is beautiful, the staff friendly and Covid precautions are reassuring. Both Dr. B and his assistant were sympathetic and gentle. I liked that in addition to X-rays, photos were taken so that I could see exactly what the problem was. I highly recommend this practice.

Fantastic experience: I had a cap come off from another dentist. Called Hartwood Dental & they made a same day appointment. I was in an out in under 30 minutes. Staff were great & Dr. Brian was super gentle & gave warning when the nerve was going to hurt. Also apologized for it. My other dentist just fired air on the exposed tooth & I just had to deal with it. Another great experience with Hartwood Dental.

Negative experience: When a business has as many "positive" reviews as this one, it begins to feel inauthentic, or not genuine. It's very rare for any business to have so many "positive" reviews. I'm one of those who has decided to leave a Negative Review because of Negative Experiences at the practice to balance out the trend. The practice has never felt the same since the former owners have left the practice and more importantly, since former employees have been fired or left the practice. The new owner seems to be penny pinching to a maximum, to even the bag you get when you leave the Office after your routine cleanings. Quite frankly, it's almost insulting at some of the changes they've made overall since changing hands (if the owner's own temperament wasn't enough). The only reason why I give this review two stars is because of the receptionist at the front desk, Jean, who has some how managed to remain despite the disaster zone that has been the change in regime. If for whatever reason they decide to replace her at some point - this review would easily become a one star. Jean is the highlight of this office that continues to make it strong and hospitable. She will make you smile and feel comfortable for each appointment. An asset they're lucky to have, like they used to have with many employees that they let go during my time as a patient. I recommend virtually any other Dental Office in the area over this office.

Positive experience: I’ve been attending this practice for five years. The place has a different feel now that Dr. Bonaczek has taken over— more commercial and less family-oriented. The dental hygienists are wonderful, though— five stars to them. This particular three-star rating is for Dr. Bonaczek’s lack of bedside manner and for the missing referral and x-rays I requested sent over to a provider they had referred me to for wisdom teeth removal. I arrived to my third-party consult and the information they had promised to send over was not where it should have been, causing a delay in my care.

Fantastic experience: Terrific team! I needed 2 crowns and Dr. Brian and Gail did the work quickly with little discomfort. They were even considerate enough to have sunglasses available to keep the bright light out of my eyes during the procedure. Jean at the front desk is great too! highly recommended.

Fantastic experience: Hardwood Dental is by far the best dental practice I’ve ever experienced. From the moment you call to schedule, Jean answers warmly and schedules expeditiously. The cleanings have been perfect and Dr. Brian is compassionate, thorough and caring. The office is gorgeous and very comfortable. By far one of the best!

Fantastic experience: Just had my 6 month cleaning today. Even with COVID I felt comfortable getting my cleaning and check-up. The staff were all very friendly as always; my cleaning by the hygienist, Rose, was painless and she was very nice; and Dr. Brian was thorough and very informative during my check-up. It's great to have a dentist that I feel comfortable to ask questions and get an explanation. If you haven't found a dentist in Pgh, you should call them!! Thanks Hartwood.

Fantastic experience: I actually don’t mind going to the dentist now!! I love Dr Brian and his staff. I am currently doing Invisalign and I am well pleased with everything so far. If you want a dentist that takes the time to talk with you and explain things with out a high pressure sales pitch then this is your practice.

They go above and beyond in ensuring their visitors are safe and comfortable during this pandemic and I will continue to recommend them to my friends and family.

Negative experience: I have NEVER experienced this terrible of service before from a doctor in a helping/treating profession. After walking back to the dentist chairs with my two younger children, I was GREETED by the dentist with, "You cannot be here. You need to go back to the lobby." (This was our very first appointment at this provider.) I explained that I was not aware of this protocol (not even upon scheduling the appointments for my two small children and not upon filling out intake forms in the front office). I explained my son's diagnosis but the dentist refused special accommodations for my 3yo with autism. I was told I was not permitted to sit with him in the dentist chair, because "if [he] did this for me, then [he] would have to do it with everybody." When I explained that my son would not proceed through the appointment without my support I was then told that "...maybe we should try again when he is older and ready." (He may be 10 when he is ready!) My son left the appointment without treatment while my 6yo stayed. I provided a "2" rating because my 6yo did enjoy her prize after her teeth were cleaned. A dental hygienist provided me with an update after the appointment stating everything looked great. I was provided with no other updates from the dentist and no x-rays were taken, typical of an intake appointment for someone 6yo. We will be returning to our former dentist, who is unfortunately farther away but now worth the extra travel effort. I recommend that this dentist receive additional training in how to support and treat children with special needs/accommodations.
