Positive experience: Excellent dental care. Annoying billing practices. Owed money on a bill. Bill sent to my house claims I've owed them money for over 90 days. This is the first I'm hearing about it. Worst still is that I was just in the office a week ago and asked if I was all set. The bill owed was for a missed appointment that was missed for a good reason but this office is very black and white about missed appointments. There is NOTHING you can say to get them to excuse a missed apointment even if the entire family has been coming for over a decade and we never missed an appointment in the past.

Negative experience: I want to share my experience so others can make an informed decision before seeking care here. In November 2022, my father passed away on November 6th. During that time, I was grieving and helping plan his wake and funeral, one of the most difficult periods of my life. Unfortunately, I missed an appointment shortly after because my focus was on my family and dealing with that loss. When I later explained the situation and even provided proof of my father’s passing, I was met with a shocking lack of compassion and understanding. Instead of working with me or showing basic empathy, the response I received felt dismissive and cold. As a result of that missed appointment, I was terminated from care. Being removed as a patient during a time of grief, despite explaining the circumstances, felt unnecessarily harsh and deeply disappointing. Healthcare providers should treat people with dignity, compassion, and humanity, especially when they are experiencing profound loss. My experience left me feeling that those values were not present here. I hope sharing this helps others understand what they may encounter and encourages the practice to reflect on how patients are treated during vulnerable moments.

Fantastic experience: Right on time, great experience as always, I highly recommend Dr. Herzog and his staff. The hygienist Amy always explains things very clearly and provides very helpful information for dental self-care. Dr. Herzog is thorough and communicates well, and will often do small bite adjustments or such things in the moment if time allows, which I have appreciate.

Negative experience: My advice to all new patients is to get an estimate of all needed work before you step a foot in that office. Have that estimate of all needed work before the work is done and not after. You will get hit with a HUGE bill - ask what percentage is covered by the Insurance, and make sure this office certify that they are in the Insurance network. They will greet new patience with smile to gain their trust - then they will hit you with huge bill, and when the bill is being disputed, they will hire a collection agency to chase you. This office runs a scam - it is all about money - and nothing similar to any ethical common dentistry practice.

Fantastic experience: We drove all the way from Maine in the mistaken impression that Herzog dental was equipped to repair partial dentures. Dr. Herzog and his team worked for an hour trying to help me despite lacking the right equipment and then called another office in Maine, asking them to see me as soon as possible. They were incredibly caring and dedicated and did not charge me because in the end they couldn’t help. That’s dedication and service.

Negative experience: Deeply Disappointing End After 25 Years of Loyalty I have been a patient of Dr. Herzog since my teenage years, spanning over two decades. During that time, I consistently referred friends, colleagues, and even high-profile individuals to his office—over 50 people in total. I truly believed in his care and helped contribute to his practice's growth and reputation. However, recent experiences have left me feeling deeply disrespected and discarded. Due to a series of personal tragedies—seven family losses between 2021 and 2023—I was forced to cancel a few appointments, some last-minute. These were never done out of negligence or disrespect, and certainly not out of entitlement. They were unavoidable, human circumstances. Most recently, I contacted the office to fix a dental issue with a tooth that was treated there, which cracked in less than 3.5 years. Initially, Dr. Herzog confused me with someone else who shared my last name. After realizing the mistake, he apologized and assured me the issue would be addressed. Yet after multiple unreturned calls, I finally spoke with a staff member named Mary. Her demeanor was dismissive and accusatory. What disturbed me most was her statement: "Nothing comes out of your pocket. You’ve never paid for anything—you have MassHealth." That comment was not only inaccurate (as I pay nearly $300 per month per family member for MassHealth coverage), it was condescending and degrading. Her tone suggested that my financial status made me less worthy of care. This is emblematic of a larger problem—how low-income patients are often looked down upon, despite being loyal contributors to the practice and the healthcare system. After over 25 years, I was informed that Dr. Herzog would no longer see me. While practices have every right to make that decision, the manner in which I was dismissed—with zero regard for the trust, referrals, and support I’ve shown—is unacceptable. I felt stripped of my dignity, reduced to nothing more than a billing code. This kind of behavior not only lacks compassion—it raises serious concerns of discrimination, defamation of character, and unethical business practices, particularly towards patients on state-funded insurance. As a result, I will be filing formal complaints with the following agencies and professional organizations: Massachusetts Board of Registration in Dentistry MassHealth Member Services & Fraud Unit American Dental Association (ADA) Office for Civil Rights (OCR), U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Massachusetts Office of the Attorney General – Health Care Division Better Business Bureau (BBB) Health Care for All – Patient Advocacy Group National Network for Oral Health Access (NNOHA) I share this not out of anger, but from a place of justice and advocacy. No patient should ever be made to feel small, expendable, or inferior based on their insurance coverage or financial standing. Dentistry is a field of care, not commerce alone. To the staff and leadership at Dr. Herzog’s office: what happened to compassion? I may no longer be your patient, but I will not remain silent when I’ve been treated unjustly.

Negative experience: I am extremely disappointed with the service at Herzog Dental. They have demonstrated a complete lack of competence in handling insurance matters. They failed to inform me of what my major insurance covered and neglected to notify me that I would be billed for services rendered. Instead, I was blindsided by a call stating that my account was being sent to collections. When I went to the office to resolve the issue, the receptionist, Mary, was incredibly rude. She shouted in front of staff and other patients, accusing me of being an irresponsible person trying to avoid paying a $160 bill. This public humiliation and unprofessional behavior are utterly unacceptable. Before I left the office, I paid the bill but expressed to Mary that I preferred to pay it with another staff member. She responded loudly in front of everyone again, saying, “Who cares, whatever, haha!” I spoke to the owner, Dr. Herzog, about this unacceptable behavior, and all he said was that this is just how she is. To make matters worse, they claimed they only sent my bill to the insurance company as a courtesy and that it was my responsibility to ensure they got paid. This lack of transparency and proper guidance is appalling. Patients deserve clear communication, respectful treatment, and competent handling of insurance claims, not negligent and hostile experiences. I strongly advise others to avoid this practice unless they want to deal with similar financial surprises and poor service.

Negative experience: Herzog was my dentist for many years and I’m glad to say I no longer go to this practice. After leaving and getting a new dentist, I finally understood what it meant to have a pain free and professional dental experience. I have eroded enamel and need to get cavities filled often. At my new dentist I don’t even feel pain afterwards! When I was getting cavities filled here, the pain I would experience in my jaw for a week afterward was unbearable.

Negative experience: Referred me to an oral surgeon for a free evaluation. That evaluation however was not free(shocking). I called them and they said “we have no affiliation to that oral surgeon” Amazing how you can have no affiliation when you made the appointment for me and make money on referrals.

My heart rate would rise ! Anxiety would set in to the point where I could hardly breathe! I thank God every day that I now have a dentist I can so comfortably visit!!! Everyone is Sooooo awesome!!! Fantastic experience: Kelly is an amazing and super thoughtful hygienist! After a LOT of dental work and a hiatus from dental insurance or visits for a few years, it would be an understatement to say that my gums were a little sensitive. Needless to say, the idea of a deep cleaning (aka scaling - to clean below the gums) made me more than anxious... Kelly was caring, gentle, and more importantly patient with every sensitive area. I certainly didn't enjoy the procedure but if I had to do it again, I'd without a doubt request her! ...and maybe a pair of headphones.

Fantastic experience: It was a total shock and a very sad time when our dentist past away at just 51y.o. We thought we would never find a dentist as gentle, thoughtful, and considerate as he. But, we finally found Dr. Herzog. No more searching for just the right dentist. We choose Dr. Herzog for sure. The office staff are very nice ladies.
