Experiencia negativa: A few days ago, we visited 5 Star Dental for a routine teeth cleaning (scaling) for our 15-year-old son. We normally visit a different dental office, but due to scheduling difficulties, we chose 5 Star Dental this time as the appointment availability worked for us. First, I would like to note that the front desk staff and supporting team members were generally very kind and professional, which we appreciated. However, I would like to share some concerns regarding the examination and explanations provided by Dr. Soo Yun Lee. During the visit, Dr. Lee stated that several of my son’s teeth were decayed and explained that if his wisdom teeth were not extracted immediately even at the age of 15 they would push the surrounding teeth and cause severe misalignment of his entire dentition. We clearly communicated that our visit was solely for a routine cleaning, and we declined any additional diagnosis or treatment, requesting only the cleaning to be performed. While the cleaning itself was completed in a relatively short amount of time, after leaving the office, my son experienced significant gum bleeding and swelling, causing him discomfort and pain for approximately four days. To better understand his condition, we scheduled a follow-up visit with another dental office for a second opinion. The results of this evaluation were quite surprising. The second dentist informed us that none of my son’s teeth were decayed, and that his wisdom teeth did not require extraction at this time, recommending that they be reassessed in approximately two years instead. Given these conflicting diagnoses, we were left questioning whether unnecessary fear may have been introduced during the initial visit, and whether excessive pressure or trauma may have been applied to my son’s gums during the cleaning process. As a parent, especially of a minor patient, I believe it is essential that diagnoses and treatment recommendations be delivered with care, objectivity, and thoughtful consideration. Unfortunately, this experience did not meet those expectations. This review is not intended to disparage the practice, but rather to share our experience in the hope that future patients and families may receive care that is consistently transparent, measured, and reassuring. They were very patient and gentle with her during the entire process, from taking her x-ray, consultation and treatment. The dentist, who spoke both Korean and English, treated her gently so that she wouldn't experience pain. She communicated the process in a caring way so that my mother in law wouldn't be nervous. I also appreciated the friendly front desk staff who explained the insurance options thoroughly.
