Dakota Smiles

Negative experience: It’s taken me one year to write this review about Dakota Smiles and the rude, condescending and immature behavior of Dr. Charles Duchsherer who agreed to see me on an emergency basis on Friday, May 16, 2025 and then proceeded to yell at me about never coming into his dental clinic again without an appointment. My dental issue was my TMJ (joints) were so painful, I literally thought the top of my head was going to explode. My 10-year old Afghan grandson, Nadim had been declared brain dead earlier that morning at Sanford Hospital after 4 days in the ICU due to a ruptured vascular brain aneurism during PE at Aurora Elementary School Tuesday, May 13, 2025. Nadim’s parents and I were in the school office when the ambulance personnel transferred Nadim from the nurses’ office to the ambulance and tried to resuscitate him for 50 minutes while I waited to drive the parents to Sanford Hospital behind the ambulance. Dr. Charles Duchsherer didn’t care to professionally assess my symptoms that I initially thought were teeth related. Instead, he continued to treat me like I was in Kindergarten by repeating over and over again maniacally to never come to the dental clinic again without an appointment while I sat in the treatment chair. Finally, I asked Dr. Charles Duchsherer to stop yelling, repeating himself over and over again and treating a 63-year old grandmother of seven grandchildren like I was in Kindergarten. Now the yelling changed to “I’m not yelling and you don’t have to be my patient, if you’re going to say “I’m yelling” at you”. I said nothing, but Dr. Charles Duchsherer started debating with himself about whether or not I should be a patient at his dental clinic for asking him to stop yelling at me while I sat in the dental treatment chair. Finally, without any dental care, Dr. Charles Duchsherer decided I should leave after being his patient for more than a decade and never come back. Of course, I obliged his unhinged and dismissive request and my husband, father and Afghan son transferred our dental care to Vetter Dental where we are treated kindly, respectfully and professionally. I also will be going to an Oral Surgeon at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN to have my bone-on-bone TMJ (joints) replaced with prosthesis joints this summer. I suffer from Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder and I’ve had both thumb joints replaced because they were bone-on-bone age 58 with the arthritis of a 95-year old woman as per my orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Charles Duchsherer was aware of my connective tissue disorder and treating it with endontist Dr. Jung who is a superb professional. I highly recommend that Dr. Charles Duchsherer’s juvenile behavior as I left the dental office be addressed with a mental health assessment. Why? Dr. Charles Duchsherer came to the check-out area I was told to stand and wait, smirked at me (someone old enough to be his mother), jumped up to touch archway on the way to his office and looked back at me with a grin as he took a swig of some Mountain Dew in a bottle, relishing his juvenile treatment and condescending attitude to a patient of his for more than a decade. Dr. Charles Duchsherer needs to seek help for his erratic and questionable mental health stability.

Negative experience: Went in to have a tooth pulled and they didn't do it because my blood pressure was too high but they said if it became an emergency they would do it. Then a few days later, it became an emergency but I was told on the phone I would need a doctor's note to show my BP was being managed or that I was safe to provide dental work to. Just a classic case of nobody in the building being on the same page (or I was blatantly lied to.) Regardless, I'm in pain and this place got to keep the $100+ for what they called an "evaluation." What an absolute scam. Luckily I was able to go elsewhere and receive the care I needed and ironically enough, my BP before the procedure was lower than it usually is! Perhaps something about the horrible business practices at Dakota Smiles is what caused the spike.

Fantastic experience: Got my 3d molds done for my grill perfect

Negative experience: Went there as a kid throughout my teen years, recently at 17 stopped going and went somewhere else. The new place said the fillings were done poorly, which I agree, were always sharp and unpolished. Felt like they were more focus on money than patients concerns. Also felt ashamed of my teeth when I went, and they never made me feel more comfortable about my teeth. I wanted to hide my teeth after ever appointment feeling like a disapiontment that I still had cavities even with my hard work. No communication, never told that I had cavities only parents were notified, but even then they only mentioned the 10 that were on one side and didn't mention the other 10 on the other side. I was never notified what was going on with my teeth, even if I was a child let them know in words that make sense to the kids. Felt more like a experiement than a person or patient they were helping. Do not recommend.

Fantastic experience: My appointment at Dakota Smiles was a great experience. My hygienist, Abby, was calm, gentle, and made me feel comfortable. My dentist Dr. Terveen, was friendly, thorough, and professional. I felt well taken care of in a timely way. I will always go to Dakota Smiles!

Fantastic experience: Very pleased with cleaning and care for my teeth the last couple of month. Like options described when extracting a tooth. Didn't force anything on me.

Negative experience: Super disappointed with our last experience. Which was completely different from the first two. We had different people this time doing my sons exam when he was just shy of 2. They didn't ask me if we were doing fluoride treatment and swooped in and put it on his teeth! He had just had that at his doctor appointment. Was not happy about that at all. And they were so ruff with him that I had problems with him bawling every time I went to brush his teeth for over a month! We never had an issue before this. The approach these staff did With my son that time around was awful! The 2 times before we didn't have any problems. Not happy! Them not asking about fluoride is unacceptable. You don't do anything to someone's child without consent.

Fantastic experience: My daughter referred me to Dakota smiles when I 1st moved to Fargo. Since I have started going there They have gone out of their way to quell all my fears. They are so eager to do whatever it takes to make you comfortable And put your fears to rest. When I Leave there it is definitely with a smile on my face. I highly recommend Dakota smiles For any dental needs.

Negative experience: Charged me $400 just to look at my teeth and take pictures of them. Didn't clean them which was the reason why I was there, didn't do anything to fix them, just looked at them and gave me a bill of $400. The entire visit, the woman who was looking at my teeth was trying to convince me to buy various toothbrushes and things that the dentist office sold, which I could find for half price on Amazon. This place just wants money, they aren't here to help your teeth.

Fantastic experience: Dakota Smiles offers a warm and welcoming dental experience! The staff is friendly, approachable, and does a great job explaining both procedures and financial details in a way that’s easy to understand. I highly recommend them!

Negative experience: Maybe you'll have better luck than I did. Clearly others have. I have visited a dentist every six months since childhood, so I know my teeth. I moved to Fargo and went to this office because it was close to my home. I went for my six month cleaning and check. Immediately, they would not do a cleaning because they said I needed a deep cleaning ($1000). Then hustled me into a side room and pointed out thousands of dollars of work I needed done, offering financing, etc. I knew it was a hustle, so I left, got a dental referral from a friend and have had two cleanings since and assurance that no work needed to be done. 7 months later they started billing me for $100 insurance didn't cover. Then turned the $100 over to a collection agency. Bad people, bad business. Nice waiting room though.

I can’t say enough wonderful things about Dr. Weigand, Destinee, and Phoenix—they’re all exceptional. Kayla also makes checkout and scheduling a breeze. Highly recommend!

Fantastic experience: I was in for my six-month checkup today. Bite-wing X-rays, exam by Dr. Charles, prophylaxis and fluoride treatment by my hygienist. All done in just under an hour. I have been coming here for my dental care for nearly six years. I have always been treated very well by the friendly and professional staff at Dakota Smiles!--I wrote the above a year ago, and today (3-26-2019) I was back to Dakota Smiles and had the same dental health procedures as listed.. Nothing new to say: same good, friendly, professional dental care service. Thanks Dakota Smiles!--I was back to Dakota Smiles Dentistry again this week (on 6-21-2021) for teeth cleaning, X-rays, dentist's exam. Can't think of anything I would change in the comments I wrote above. I have been very pleased with the care I have hand from these folks for the past nine years or more. -- I was in for my regular six-month hygienist's cleaning and X-rays and dentists exam. I see I haven't written a review in about five years, but if I had kept doing reviews in the time between back then and my visit yesterday (2-3-2025), they would have presented me as the same, smiling dental patient back nearly 14 years ago. Very satisfied!

Dr. Charles was very nice and great with procedures. My daughter had to get a crown put in and they were fantastic at helping her understand what was going on and getting her in and out quickly. Negative experience: The people working there were fine. But they charged my insurance company $500. for x rays and teeth cleaning that took ten minutes. They gave me an estimate for the procedures they wanted to do to my teeth. Sixteen thousand dollars that's right $16,000

Negative experience: Multiple issues over 2 years. We called ahead of time to verify the provider was in the network with our new insurance company, and we were told that they were. This was later found to be incorrect, leaving us responsible for out of the network balance. We contacted Dakota Smiles about this issue, and we were told: "There was no way that could've happened". I was then accused of verbal abuse by the Insurance Coordinator after politely asking for a policy she was citing in writing. It's a ~$400 responsibility; it's not a huge deal, and we will ultimately end up paying it, but the way we were treated and spoken to by Tiffany was unacceptable. I personally have never been gas-lit in a customer service situation before, and it was very unsettling. I did not ask for the balance to be forgiven; I was asking if a resolution of any sort was available, and I was told that the owner, Dr. Charles Duchsherer said "Contracting any insurance is a courtesy to their patients and that they would not offer any resolution." We were misled and then met with a very rude and condescending tone when it was questioned. Very unprofessional!

Fantastic experience: I have struggled with Bad teeth the past 6 years, I started with Aspen dental an felt my opinion didn’t matter an very corporate, Here At Dakota Smiles I feel like a Member of the team after my first appointment an it was also about 17k cheaper for all my work I need done an then some!❤️

Fantastic experience: Dakota Smiles has some of the most empathetic and compassionate dental staff I have ever worked with. When you have bad teeth there is plenty of embarrassment and the last thing you need is a judgmental dental staff making you feel worse. From my first appointment the only thing their staff made me feel was their desire to help me have a healthy mouth. They were also great with my toddler who started off unwilling to let them even look in her mouth. 5 stars is not enough for this great company.

Negative experience: I called to ask how they handle anxious patients and they didn't know how to answer it. They came around and had some okay answers, but then scheduled me an appointment without saying anything about the fact that my insurance would be out of network for them. I told them my insurance and they gladly took the insurance information without mentioning network status. I called my insurance company and confirmed with them, and called back to immediately cancel the appointment. I read reviews about them being deceitful. I should have trusted those reviews. Very disappointing.

Fantastic experience: Absolutely amazing, as a trucker hard to get seen/stay in one place. They had no problem working with my schedule, when I went in they looked at my tooth (cracked & extremely painful). Said let's get it out 20 minutes later I'm toothless, absolutely amazing place! Thank you Dr Terveen and the other younger lady!
