Experiencia fantástica: We recently switched to Tarheel Family Dentistry from a Raleigh dentist and have absolutely loved this practice! It was easy to make an appointment - the front desk staff are great - and the hygienists are very knowledgeable, completing painless, thorough cleanings (as well as being super-friendly). Dr. Hewgley is amazing too - she proactively referred me to a specialist for a long-running issue and for the first time in years that it is now improving! I also like that I have not been pressured to immediately get crown work done - I can do it on a schedule that works for me.

Experiencia negativa: Last month, my dentist, Dr.Wilson, left the practice. I was never notified. I had a cleaning scheduled and just happened to notice that Dr. Wilson was no longer listed on the website when I was confirming their address. When I called to ask about this, the response I got was “yeah, he’s left, so you’ll be seeing Dr. Riley. She’s great and has actually been here longer.” As a patient, I should have been notified immediately when my care was transferred to Dr. Riley. I’ve never met her. I’m not familiar with her background. I was not at all comfortable with this. I asked if patients had been notified of the change and the response was “I don’t think so…?” I checked my email and I hadn’t received any communication nor had I received a phone call. This level of carelessness was surprising to me, so I cancelled my appointment (and they waived the $50 fee as a courtesy) and I terminated my relationship with them. I’ll be finding a dentist elsewhere.

Experiencia negativa: I had been going here for over a decade. I have stayed with them over the course of several owners and a number of head dentists because I felt like the care and attention I was receiving was excellent. Unfortunately this has changed in the last few years and both quality of service, as well as the care with which they deal with you has bottomed out. Recent policy changes on their part have meant that I have ended up paying out of pocket for care that should have been covered by insurance. I paid this this first few times, but the amount kept adding up and there seemed to be no understanding on their part as to how this might effect me. The final straw was when I woke up this morning sick, asked to reschedule, and was told I would have to pay a $50 fee. On top of this, they have begun recommending expensive procedures that are not covered by insurance as part of every appointment I have with them. Whatever care that this company used to have, it is clear it is no longer a family practice and is instead just another corporate entity driven by profit alone. I simply cannot recommend this place anymore and will be looking for another dentist, hopefully one that treats me like a person and not just another number they can take money from.

Once I became a customer of Tarheel Family & Cosmetic Dentistry I changed my mind about dentists. After a couple of years forced separation I am back, and happy to be back. Experiencia negativa: I'm going to start off with Dr. Hewgley seems like a kind person and I believe she has the best intentions. That being said after a tooth filling, I was having some bite issues (no pain just alignment issues). She kindly fit me in and decided to do a full bite adjustment. Almost all my bottom teeth were shaved. Not too long after, I started getting some of the worst pain of my life. I have since been diagnosed with tmj and every single day struggle with eating, sleeping, swallowing, migraines, ear pain, etc. The office was no help upon me coming back. She even suggested at one point I shave another tooth. She also told me she had just shaved her own teeth recently LOL. I have since learned how complicated the jaw structure is, and shaving teeth should really be done as a last resort. It is a permenant process, and I will never be able to restore my original bite again. Treatment for this costs thousands of dollars. Proceed with caution if you decide to go here.

All of the staff members are super nice, respectful, compassionate, and 110% professional. The entire environment around the dentist office is clean, organized, and extremely welcoming. It's not a dentist office where you get your teeth cleaned and leave, they are so much more than that. I've had a couple of different hygienist and have been over seen by 2 dentist, and they all have shown true interest in their professions by explaining procedures thoroughly and meticulously to help me with keeping my teeth as healthy as possible. I would 100% recommend this office to anyone.

While I was very sad to find out Dr Robinson left, I think he did so in the hands of a great new team. I am very happy with the new doctors and hygienists. I am hopeful they will all stay for a long time. The new personnel took note of a tooth which is cavity prone and a filling which needs to be replaced. But also keeping in mind I am doing Invisalign. So they are coordinating with my orthodontist to make sure everything is right. It makes me happy to see them going the extra mile. I love the new office space. New everything, the decor/paint is fresh, and the fact I don't have to go from room to room to get an exray now. PS. Don't want to forget about the Administration staff, that's a whole nother hard job in itself! Thanks for everything y'all!

Experiencia fantástica: I love my Tar Heel Family Dentistry family! I have been a patient of Dr. Cook for a little longer than a year now. She is great! First of all, she listens to every problem and evaluates them seriously without judgement. Second, she always comes with a plan. She informs me about the potential problems, asks questions to narrow down those, then always brings a few solutions and suggestions. More importantly, she keeps me informed at every step of the way, which makes me feel valued and cared for. There were times I was desperate and emotional about post-root canal sensitivities and she always provided me guidance with patience. I think good communication skills and excellent care are her biggest strengths. I have to add that Tar Heel Family dentistry staff is always professional, kind, joyful, and thoughtful. I feel like they all make a great team! My only negative comment: I only wish they were open on Fridays, too. I had an issue on a Wednesday evening with my temporary crown and couldn’t come back until the next Tuesday because Friday wasn’t an option. But they were super helpful in arranging the earliest appointment possible.

Experiencia positiva: UPDATE (dropped rating to 3 stars from 5): As of December 2022, Dr Robinson has moved his practice to Durham. Jury is still out on the doctors who took over this practice. Bright new space (they moved a block away around the same time), but still working out kinks with the new furniture, layout, and equipment too. FWIW, owners were very secretive about Dr Robinson’s leaving and wouldn’t allow him to communicate with his patients, so it was a very unwelcome surprise to show up for an appointment and find he was gone. ORIGINAL REVIEW (5 stars): Always a good experience. Patient, kind, skillful, thorough. Dr Robinson doesn’t recommend unnecessary work, but is watchful and presents options when something is needed. My regular hygienist Natalia is fantastic, as was Rebekah who filled in for her today due to an unforeseen absence. I highly recommend this practice.

In fact, second to purchasing, a vehicle it is, begrudgingly, the biggest personal investment I’ve made in my life. Experiencia fantástica: Clearly from all these reviews, this is a great practice, but I feel compelled to tell our story. My 17 year old UNC freshman went in for a cleaning - only to discover that Dr. Robinson believed my son had an abscess in his upper jaw bone. Dr. Robinson wanted my son to come back for more x-rays. Before my son could go back, the abscess became very infected - high fever and terrible pain. Truly an emergency. Dr. Robinson and his staff saw my son immediately and personally helped get him to a trusted surgeon. Obviously, a great dental practice if you live in Chapel Hill, BUT a phenomenal place if you have a college student in the area. Very grateful for this level of care.

They are caring and compassionate every step of the way and truly prioritize patient comfort. Dr. Robinson is an extremely knowledgeable practitioner, and always explains his recommendations clearly and thoroughly. They are a shining example of patient-centered care, and I am so happy to have found a practice that I can say I truly trust!
