Negative experience: I love that this office offers the laser. I actually told all my friends & doctors I work with about him. However, after today I will be letting all of them know he’s not someone you want to work with. I came to find out that they are not transparent at all about the materials they use in their office. I told Dr. Porter I don’t use fluoride on my son & he said that was no problem. He failed to mention that they use fluoride-releasing dental composites for their fillings. I had a bad feeling this morning when I was taking my son in for his fillings so I asked them to give me the brand & name of the composite they use. I was shocked that he hadn’t mentioned to me that they had fluoride in them because we specifically had a conversation about fluoride. When I asked to talk to him today about all of this hoping that he would be willing to order a different material to use to fill my son’s cavities, he wasn’t open to the idea at all. However, he did mention how happy he was that SC doesn’t have fluoride in the water. I asked “so you are happy about that but then you put fluoride in people’s mouths? How is that any different?” He was unable to answer the question. He just said sorry I’m not going to work with your son. Also another important thing to note is that his hands were shaking a lot when examining my son’s mouth. I am definitely wondering if it’s okay for a dentist to have those issues when needing to be so precise, especially with something like a laser. He also doesn’t allow parents chair side when their child is having the laser/cavity filling which is a big red flag to me as well. When a doctor isn’t willing to honor a parents request or even consider doing so, and then also failing to be transparent about their materials, this is not a good doctor & I will not be recommending him to anyone.

Fantastic experience: Amazing 1st experience! My daughter kept talking about it after the appointment and she's been brushing her teeth and flossing and pretend she's at the dentist.

Fantastic experience: Such a wonderful practice. Everyone who works here is so friendly and warm. Dr Porter is so patient and engaged with my young children. You can really tell everyone here cares deeply about what they do and providing a positive experience for all the children they care for. From start to finish there are so many small yet intentional touches designed to make the families feel cared for, and the children comfortable during what could potentially be an intimidating experience. Highly, highly recommend Dr Porter's practice.

Fantastic experience: We have been taking both our kids to Dr. Porter since we moved to Santa Cruz 3 years ago. They are now 5 and 3 and they love that his office has games and that they get a new toothbrush, floss, and a toy each time. It makes it easier to get them excited about going. Their office is accommodating and let's us do both kids' visits at the same time. It's a whole family affair and they treat our family with such kindness. I highly recommend them!

Fantastic experience: We had such a positive experience today. My child has historically been a very anxious dental patient, so appointments have often been challenging. At this visit, though, he was able to complete a full cleaning, something that hasn’t always been possible in the past. Both the hygienist and the dentist were incredibly patient, understanding, and gentle in the way they eased him back into the experience. They took their time, explained things clearly, and created a calm environment that really helped build his trust. We are so grateful to have found a dental team that is so compassionate and supportive with kids who feel nervous about dental care. It made a huge difference for our family.

Fantastic experience: My son had his first visit with Dr. Porter yesterday for a routine cleaning and to check on a wiggly tooth that just won’t let go. He was immediately at ease in the office waiting area and gave the games “two thumbs up!” The office is clean and very welcoming. The staff were all warm and friendly and took the time to greet us by name, and made us feel like long time clients! Dr. Porter was so friendly and explained everything to both my son and myself in easy to understand language that didn’t feel overwhelming or confusing at all. We are looking forward to visiting Dr. Porter for many years to come!

Negative experience: We had a very disappointing experience at this dental office. When I arrived for my children’s scheduled appointment, the front desk staff informed me there was an outstanding balance but could not explain what it was for. It took nearly 30 minutes and a second staff member coming in to finally figure it out. During that time, they refused to take my children back for their appointment, even though we arrived on time. After finally resolving the issue, the office then told me we needed to reschedule because the dentist was now running behind—even though the delay was caused by their own staff not being able to determine the balance. I insisted on continuing with the appointment since we were not late. I also paid the remaining balance, which included a $77 per child cancellation fee that was never clearly discussed ahead of time and was only brought up the morning of the appointment. The actual treatment lasted about 7 minutes, and my daughter later told me they quickly only brushed her teeth because they were in a hurry. At the end of the visit, the dentist sat us down and asked what dentist I see, suggesting that my kids should go there instead. Instead of addressing the front office issues or apologizing for the situation, we were essentially dismissed as patients. Overall, the experience felt extremely unprofessional, poorly organized, and disrespectful of our time as patients. I hope the office improves their communication and front desk processes so other families do not have the same experience.

Fantastic experience: Dr. Porter and his staff are wonderful! We brought our children and felt immediately welcomed. The kids were so comfortable with everyone at their office. Dr. Porter and his team are very knowledgeable and helped our kids to learn how to care for their teeth. We look forward to bring our kids for many years to come and referring our friends and family to him! Thank you!

Fantastic experience: Our family always has a great experience when we visit Dr Porter’s office.

Fantastic experience: Dr. Porter is so kind, gentle and experienced. I drove all the way up from SLO county to bring my son to him because I knew he would be getting the best care. It was so worth the added effort to know my son was getting treatment that we could depend on. Dr. Porter’s team is also a group of sweet, empathetic people who care about the kids so much.

Positive experience: Dr. Porter is great at building trust with anxious children, but parents should be aware of a strict policy: no parents allowed in the room for procedures. This became a major issue for us when my daughter needed a tooth extraction right before a family trip. Despite her anxiety, Dr. Porter was inflexible about letting me stay in the room, citing space issues (though there appeared to be enough room for me to sit quietly in the corner). Because she couldn't handle the procedure alone, we were forced to leave and scramble to find a new dentist last minute. We found a new office that welcomed parents in the room, and with my support, my daughter did just fine. If you want to be present for your child's procedures, look elsewhere.

Positive experience: The team was super friendly and helpful, and the doctor seems really nice too. The routine check-up and the cleaning went smoothly - kid didn’t have any issues or major work done. She left feeling super happy!

Fantastic experience: If you have kids on the spectrum or with special needs dr. Porter and his team of incredible humans are the best around! We were met with the most loving and accepting people! Everyone was so understanding through the whole process! My daughter is non verbal and severely autistic and they did so much to make her feel safe and myself too! This team has dedicated themselves to to creating a calm and supportive environment to help kids like my daughter get the care they need without any extra trauma! I’m eternally grateful and I cannot recommend this practice enough ❤️‍❤️‍❤️‍ thank you all so so so much

He needed a procedure with sedation, and I was so impressed with the patience, compassion, and professionalism we experienced. Dr. Porter is wonderful and his staff made sure my son was comfortable and cared for every step of the way. Ms. Laura at the front desk was so kind and helpful. She took the time to answer all my billing and insurance questions. I’m truly thankful for the wonderful care and compassion we received. We definitely recommend this Dental office!

Fantastic experience: I just want to take a minute to talk about our EXCELLENT 1st visit to this office (and first dentist visit for my baby!) My son and I came in today and were blown away by how beautiful and kid friendly the office was. Everyone from reception to hygienist to doctor were friendly, kind and knowledgeable. Dr Porter really took the time to educate me on how to best clean and floss my babies teeth and answered all questions without rushing. He really cares and it shows! I am so pleased we landed with this office for our dental care and truly am excited to continue bringing my son! Also cutest little gift bag was the most special touch. Negative experience: Avoid this place. Not only is billing a nightmare, but there is a lack of communication. Edit to owner response: All my accounts are settled. After three routine visits and one cavity filling, where not one time I came out satisfied with the experience and then had to frustratingly deal with billing and office staff… I will never return. Furthermore, after hearing other similar experiences from friends, I felt it best to post my review to warn others of a potentially terrible experience with their dental care.

Fantastic experience: My 6 year old daughter had dental surgery yesterday 5/20/2025 she had a couple cavities and a tooth extraction. My experience started with us parking next to BUZZ LIGHTYEARS spaceship which already eased her nerves she was shocked and so excited to see if buzz was really in there!!! When buzz appeared she was beside herself! This made everything so much calmer for this mama! Buzz walked us back and the process of going to sleep was done in literally a min or 2, I did get emotional which is normal. Dr. Targ was INCREDIBLE. He was so thorough with his process and the steps he was going to take he even went as far as saying he is a father and will look after my daughter as if it was his own ❤️ Dr. Porter was a life saver, he checked in on me a couple times before after starting her procedure, he was so kind and through! Prior to me saying yes to this surgery he meet with me twice and truly made me feel safe with making this decision. I also want to shout out the office staff, they really were SO KIND helping me through my emotions regarding this choice I made, like I said I did get emotional which they reassured me every parent does and it’s okay. Back story, my daughter is a twin & they both have a very dangerous birth with NICU time, this trauma added to my emotions. My daughter woke up and came home and was perfectly normal the rest of the day! This was the best choice I could have made for her dental health, and absolutely recommend Dr Porter and his incredible team. Im very pleased, & thank you for making this an easy choice!

Fantastic experience: Dr. Porter’s practice was very kid friendly and calm! We are new to the area and this was our 6 year old’s first visit there. She had X-rays, and exam, and cleaning. All was quick, again super kid friendly. Both Dr Porter and hygienist Dana explained every step to our daughter keeping her calm and comfortable. She left proud of her self and excited to floss and brush her teeth with her new gear! Dr Porter answered all of my questions throughly as well. Already booked her next cleaning! I highly recommend this practice!

Fantastic experience: Dr. Porter helped us tremendously with the laser removal of our son’s pesky mucocele. It was a stubborn mucocele, but Dr. Porter saw to it, that it would be removed for good. We have also had great experiences with other dental team members during cleanings and X-rays. Our son also loves the balloon game in lobby, so that helps keep a positive association with the dental visits. Thank you Dr. Porter and team for your support!

Fantastic experience: My 13 yr old daughter Audrey went to see Dr. Porter today. When I asked her if the appointment with Dr. Porter was good, she replied, “ It was more than good, it was great! Dr. Porter was happy with my teeth habits!!” My daughter is shy with adults, but she is very comfortable with Dr. Porter. He is so kind and patient with her. We love Dr. Porter!!

Fantastic experience: I grew up going to Dr. Porter, he did all my braces and anything else I needed until I aged out. I just took my first baby to him and she had a great experience as well. He’s always gentle and kind and I had nothing but good memories being back in his office! We love Dr. Porter!

Fantastic experience: We love the team here. From entering the lobby, the whole experience is so child friendly. They understand our kiddos needs and are patient and kind (both with our toddler and us as parents). We feel well taken care of and are so happy with a child centered experience.

Our kids are always looking forward to going because of the fun electronic game table in the lobby, the selfie machine, and getting to pick their flavors for toothpastes :) Their office and staff atmosphere could not be more kid-friendly and their genuine care for our kids and their dental health is evident from the moment you walk in! Fantastic experience: Our 5 year old son was referred to Dr Porter from his previous dentist for various reasons, including having a diagnosis of ASD and extreme anxiety with any medical setting. The moment we stepped through the office door, our son was engaged and enamored with the decor and play table.The staff was friendly and inviting.When he met Dr Porter, you’d have NEVER known he’d ever had any issues previously with dental visits. Dr Porter instantly had his trust and had him at ease throughout the visit. Dr Porter explained everything and went over all the treatment options. I never felt pressured on making any decision and in the end, I’m confident in the treatment plan we decided on. They showed us how to help our little guy floss and for the first time in his life, he allowed someone to floss his teeth, I was SHOCKED. He was even happy enough to tell the staff that he would “see you next time” when we were leaving. Dr Porter is our son’s new dentist and I’m excited for what the future holds in not only my child’s dental health, but continuing to foster positive and happy experiences in healthcare for him while navigating his sensory issues.

Fantastic experience: Wonderful service at this office! First off my daughter loves the waiting room and I can see other kids do too, but they don’t keep you waiting long. The dentist takes his time to communicate with parents, educate us and answer questions. You can really tell that he cares about the well being and comfort of his clients. The staff is great too, we are in and out of there in less time than I was expecting. I’m really glad that we found them and highly recommend them to other parents with kids.

Fantastic experience: Wonderful experience from the moment we walked into the office. The waiting room is very visually stimulating for busy little bodies. There is a large interactive game in the middle of the room and a bookcase full of wonderful children’s books about teeth. Couldn’t recommend more for your child’s first and continued dental care. Looking forward to calling this practice home for my child’s dental needs for the foreseeable future. Fantastic experience: The office is amazing for kids and the staff are all experts at taking care of littles and very kind. Also the most on time office I’ve ever been to. We usually wait 3-8 minutes to be seen and are often in and out with a cleaning and exam in under 15 minutes.

Negative experience: Office is not very understanding of special needs kids. Our child has autism and other disorders, and it’s difficult to get her anywhere for any type of appointment. Because she was 15 minutes late for her appointment for fillings, they wouldn’t take her, and charged us $100. As long as you don’t have a special needs child, I would recommend them. If you do, it’s very stressful and probably better to look for an office that is more accommodating.

Fantastic experience: Dr. Brent Porter is without a doubt one of the most gentile, talented, hard working dentists in the country. Not only does he provide an incredibly painless form of Solea laser based treatment for his patients, but he also goes the extra mile to explain what he is doing as he works as well as why. His treatments are all preventative and minimally invasive so that cavities do not grow to where they absolutely need to be filled. He is very honest and fair about his recommendations. If I could give Dr. Porter 7 stars I would in a heart beat.

Fantastic experience: This is the best Dentist/Orthodontist we have been to, hands down. More than once, another dentist told us something couldn’t be done, and then Dr. Porter did it for us. My kids feel safe in his hands, and now we won’t go to anyone else. Also, the office is very clean, and the staff are extremely friendly!

The receptionists were warm and welcoming while we waited and the assistant who came to bring us to the back was as well! Dr Porter was very welcoming , and informative . Fantastic experience: I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Porter and all of the staff. I recently took my five and two year old daughters, and they were both very stressed and scared about having to go to the dentist. As soon as we walked in, my five year old couldn’t get over how fun it was inside — lots of great books and activities, the waiting room is great, etc. The staff were so friendly and welcoming, and her anxiety disappeared immediately. My two year old was still nervous, and clingy, and the staff were so patient and good with her — they took their time to make friends with her, talked her through everything, and made it a really positive experience. She was laughing and having a great time by the end of it. I’m really grateful!

Fantastic experience: We loved our experience at Dr Porter’s office! It was my daughter’s first real visit to the dentist and they made it so fun and comfortable for her. Highly recommend.

Fantastic experience: Because of Dr. Porter’s office my kids are excited to go to the dentist, no joke. I had to take one in to get a filling and the other was jealous. The office is clean and whimsically decorated. There are so many flavors of toothpaste and polish to choose from. Dr. Porter and all the staff clearly have great respect for their patients, regardless of age. I can’t say enough good things about them.

Fantastic experience: We had a very pleasant experience with Dr. Porter and his staff. My son was very anxious about the appointment due to him having a “sugar bug”, but Dr. Porter was very patient with him and spend time explaining everything that he was doing, the staff was also very helpful and kind. Dr. Porter is very professional, he took the time to explain what needs to be done and provides valuable advice. It's not easy to find a good dentist for your kids, who is patient and calming. I highly recommend Dr. Porter and his staff for kids.

Fantastic experience: UPDATE: DEC. 7, 2022 Today, our youngest had her braces removed, and the Brent J. Porter office celebrated her milestone as their own. What a tremendous completion of a journey made pleasant and comfortable thanks to this wonderful dentist and staff! * * * Dr. Porter is such a patient, family-friendly dentist, and we trust him completely with the dental and orthodontic care of our two children. Our eldest is about to start on braces, and I don't believe he could be in better hands. What a relief it is to us as his parents to know we have Dr. Porter walking alongside us.
