Experiencia negativa: Beware! I cannot recommend Old Town Dental based on my experience. During my dental exam with Old Town Dental, I was told that I had 2 cavities and needed a deep cleaning. I was then presented with a treatment plan totaling $2800. Mind you, this is 3x's the national average for said procedures so I decided to book a ticket and go to my regular dentist in Philadelphia. My dentist in Philadelphia found that I DID NOT have the 2 cavities I was told I had, and that I DID NOT need the deep cleaning that had been recommended. Learning this was extremely concerning and left me questioning the ethics of Old Town Dental. I believe they profile new patients based on where they live. I was left wondering whether treatment recommendations and pricing may vary depending on the patient. I can't say for certain, but the high cost of the proposed treatment and the big discrepancy between my diagnosis and the actual dental work needed raised concerns for me. Before my appointment, I had seen comments on a local Facebook community page from others who expressed concerns about their experiences with this office. I chose to make my own judgment at the time, but after what I experienced, I now understand why those concerns were raised. I would steer clear of this dental office, all together.

Experiencia negativa: i went in for my cleaning and showed the dentist small chips in my teeth from chronic night grinding. i have worn a heavy thick nightguard since i got braces when i was a kid. i used that same nightguard for 8 years. i told them i would like to purchase a new heavy duty night guard so i will stop chipping my teeth in my sleep. they gave me a jelly nightguard that was $800. i had it for almost 3 months and put cracks in it, so it didn’t protect my teeth at all. i still chipped my teeth with it in. i brought it back and they asked if i wanted to return it, i said i was afraid to sleep without it. i purchased another night guard that was hard and had a barrier below to protect my teeth even if i do grind. this is the exact night guard i needed in the first place. i called and asked if i could finally get a refund or return it now that my teeth are protected. they put me on hold and never called me back. i will never return here and i would seriously consider using a different dentist than Old Town.

I checked out Old Town Dental to see how it stacked up against the other two places I’ve gone to in Key West. Their $199 “new patient” deal got me X-rays and a cleaning. The staff are great. Daphne & Everyone were genuinely nice and chill, zero pushiness or judgment. I’m the type who only pops in for cleanings every couple years, and they made me feel totally comfortable. I knew I’d need a crown replaced so I took a couple days comparing prices at three other offices in town, and OTD came out on top. Took 2 hours from start to finish and zero pain. If you want friendly people and good work without the hard sell, give them a try.

I have extensive anxiety about going to the dentist even for just a cleaning (like I need anxiety meds, pain shots and on the mainland I use to have to get the calming gas). Felix is so patient and gentle. Explains every step before he takes it and has an amazing understanding and knowledge of what needs to be done and how to do it minimizing pain and anxiousness. Experiencia positiva: A few years ago I came to this office and had an extensive cleaning I truly needed. I was really happy with the staff and care, and I trusted them enough to bring my husband and son in as well. We’re locals (my husband and son were born and raised in the Keys, and I’ve been here over 20 years) and we’re cash-pay patients. I’ll also own my part as I went a few years between cleanings, and I understand that can lead to issues. But my most recent visit left me feeling overwhelmed and discouraged. I came in expecting a cleaning, had x-rays, and then was told I couldn’t get a regular cleaning and would need another deep cleaning due to gum spacing. The way it was explained felt alarming as someone who doesn’t know dental terminology, and I left with the impression that my gums might not be able to support my teeth sooner than later. I know that may not be the exact clinical wording, but that was the takeaway, and it was scary. What confused me most was how quickly the conversation shifted from gum health to Invisalign. If periodontal concerns are the priority, I expected we’d focus on treating that first and clearly explain a step-by-step plan what needs to happen now, what can wait, what my options are, and how to prevent it from getting worse. Instead, I felt like I had to go home and research everything on my own because alternatives and preventative care weren’t really discussed during the visit. I ended up leaving without a cleaning that day (the front desk did charge me for x-rays only, which I appreciated). Then receiving an $8,000 treatment plan afterward felt overwhelming not because of the cost, but because of how abruptly everything shifted and how I walked out feeling scared and ashamed instead of supported. I’m willing to do the treatment I truly need, even if it’s expensive, but I also want to fully understand it and feel comfortable with the plan. After reading other reviews and seeing how the office responds, it often comes across as defensive, which honestly made me feel more justified in how I felt leaving the appointment. It took me a few weeks to leave this review because I was still feeling unsettled and wanted to make sure I was writing from a fair place. I also went back and read through the reviews to see if I was the only one who felt this way, and what I saw reflected a similar tone and experience. This review isn’t written to argue or attack it’s for the dental office, in the hope it’s read and used as feedback. For many people, the dentist is already nerve-wracking, and the tone and communication can make all the difference. Because of this experience, I’ll be getting a second opinion. I truly hope this helps the office reflect on how these conversations land on the patient side and improve the experience for others.

He was very receptive when I told him that I had discomfort from the filling when freediving and he fixed it without charge. No problems with it since!

Experiencia negativa: THIS WEEK I WENT THERE FOR A CLEANING THAT LASTED 20 MINUTES AND COST $185. Had been quoted $140-150 by a live person - but was told that I only talked with and misunderstood a BOT. Essentially I was called a ‘liar’. I will be looking for a new provider..Things have drastically changed since I wrote this in 2022. “Exceptional. Everyone was friendly, professional, caring and informative. It was great to have my crown replaced within a couple of hours - painless and perfect! I am so happy I choose OTD and Dr. Mullen for dental care in Key West.

He is incredibly professional and gentle, and I truly can’t say enough good things about him. He’s a master at what he does and the reason I gladly drive an hour for my dental cleanings.

Now we go to the expense of flying back to KW for an emergency appointment which they said was covered however today they said it would cost her another $3000. I'm filing a complaint with the Florida dental board and considering legal actions for medical malpractice.

Experiencia negativa: I recently went to Old Town Dental and paid $2,500 out of pocket, but I honestly don’t feel like the experience matched the cost. At first, they did give me a breakdown and explained what I was paying for — but when I later received the detailed invoice, it showed a lot of extra small charges that were never clearly explained. What really upset me was what happened to my gums. They cut a part of my gum during the procedure without telling me. Even though my mouth was so numb and it was hard to talk, I tried my best to ask questions because it was really important for me to understand what happened there. When I asked, I was told it was just the result of removing buildup. But later, I found out that wasn’t true. What actually happened was that my gum had been cut, and because there was no proper oxygen flow to that area, the tissue turned black from trapped blood. It looked like a gap between my teeth, but it was really dead gum tissue. Eventually, that part of my gum came off completely, leaving a visible space. After everything was done, they barely gave me any instructions on how to care for my mouth. All they said was not to eat for 30 minutes. No one explained that my mouth would be sore for days or how to handle the healing process. I left feeling confused, in pain, and unsure about what to expect. I really wish I had done more research beforehand and found a better place where I could feel comfortable and properly cared for. I only went because I truly care about my health and wanted to take care of my teeth, but it was not worth it. I ended up going home not only with my gum cut, but also with my teeth and smile looking different than when I came in. I left feeling disappointed, taken advantage of, and honestly like I had been scammed right in front of my eyes. It wasn’t fair, and I didn’t deserve that kind of treatment. There were many things that should have been discussed and explained, but instead, they just did what they did and sent me home. I’m extremely disappointed now and I don’t think there’s any way to fix my gums. In the pictures I’ve added, you can clearly see the part of my gum that was removed and the area it was cut and detached from. Please, and I’m begging anyone reading this — look at their reviews before you decide to go here. This is the price you pay for not checking first. If I had seen the one-star reviews before, I would have never gone there. Never. I’m going to make sure more people know about this experience across my other social media platforms because no one deserves to go through this experience. ⸻ Follow-up to the Owner’s Reply: To clarify, my original review made no mention of any misunderstanding regarding insurance or copay obligations. My concern is that the cost breakdown provided prior to treatment did not match the final billing documentation — a serious issue that calls into question this clinic’s transparency and ethical standards. The owner’s reply, and the clinic’s handling of my follow-up, only underscores how unprofessional and careless this practice appears to be. Their response gives the clear impression that revenue and convenience are being prioritized over patient safety and proper care. Such conduct raises grave concerns about whether the owner should retain responsibility for patients’ health. It is also alarming that the owner appears unaware that I contacted the office to report severe soreness and that part of my gum had detached from the surrounding tissue. This is not a routine side effect and should have been treated as an urgent medical matter requiring immediate attention. The lack of communication, documentation, and accountability within this practice is unacceptable. This matter is being taken extremely seriously and will be pursued through all appropriate legal and regulatory channels until it is properly addressed and resolved.

I was really nervous going in, but my dentist and the whole team made me feel completely comfortable from start to finish. They explained everything clearly, made sure I was relaxed, and checked in with me every step of the way. The procedure was quick, smooth, and surprisingly painless. Even the recovery went better than I expected thanks to their care and instructions. I’m so grateful to have such a kind, professional, and skilled dentist. I would highly recommend them to anyone—especially if you’re anxious about dental work or oral surgery. They truly made a stressful situation easy and stress-free!

Experiencia negativa: If I could I would rate 0, schedule my wife for tooth extraction, but when she came for appointment, they have no clue what’s needs to be done, try to offer other procedure to do, then they did x-ray to her, and after claim that the doctor which do extractions come back September….. and rip her off for 200$. Pure scam!!! Make sure before you go that they understand you and know what needs to be done. Money and time waste for us…(

Experiencia negativa: Terrible service. Made an appointment for a cleaning and exam, not an exam and “possibility” of cleaning. Wanted to pay out of pocket for exactly those procedures. Asked how much, and they have disguised a “deal” that x-rays, and few procedures are combined under a price of $199. I did not ask for a “deal” and wanted to pay for a cleaning and exam for myself, completely out of pocket, without insurance. Only to come to the end of the x-rays, they have told me I need a deep cleaning and cannot obtain the simple basic cleaning that I called for in the first place. This is a scam. Please prepare yourselves for your next appointments here. Or, find a better establishment that can afford to be clear with you.

Experiencia negativa: ****BEWARE OF SNEAKY CHARGES**** Do not come here!! Shady business! Always came here for routine cleaning never paid anything as my insurance covers it. Then all of a sudden magically I have an 80 copay! Ask insurance about it, said they did a service that wasn't covered. Was never given this information beforehand or was asked if I wanted this service which I later found out was optional! They just come up with services that they can sneak in with your cleaning just to charge you and say it's copay! Ridiculous! This office will also make you wait more than 30 mins of your scheduled appointment time! Have no consideration of other peoples time!

Experiencia negativa: Be very careful coming here they are making up charges and charging for procedures without your knowledge or approval! My wife and I have been customers here for 3 years. Today she went in for a routine cleaning, a procedure she's had done about 6 times. We have never been charged a co pay, our insurance covers cleanings. Nor has anyone told her she needed anything other than routine maintenance. Today after her cleaning she was told she owed an $80 co pay. When she asked about it, excuse #1 was that insurance procedures had changed. She disagreed and the front desk begins raising the volume of their tone insinuating she could not pay, in a room full of waiting customers. My wife calls me and asks if there has been any changes, there has not been. We then asked for the information of what was done and to bill us so that we can clear up whatever confusion there is with insurance. NO, she MUST pay now! After my wife pays the bill, I call the office. Excuse #2 is now that my insurance does not cover the service any more, wrong again. So I call my insurance company with the code information the office gives me. Turns out they did the cleaning (insurance covers that) but also conducted a service of some kind of irrigation that is knowingly not covered. They never mentioned the additional procedure. They've never done this procedure in the past on her. The insurance explains that it's not so much a co pay as and additional item they charged that was unrequested, and unauthorized. When we asked for a refund of the procedure we did not authorize, they tell us they've done it before but have always waived the fee out of courtesy. (I'm sure all doctors lovingly waive fees for years). Once you are an established customer they will start tacking on fees. Who knows if they even conduct the services they claim to add since there is never any discussion with the customer about what's being done. Then misrepresnt what the charges actually are to get your money before you can consult with your insurance company. There has been billing issues here in the past, wrong codes submitted, co pays due because billing clerks misspell6 names, fees changing because numbers were submitted backwards to the insurance companies. We always deal with it though, every single visit results in hours on the phone, little did we realize what we gave them grace on thinking were typos and grammatical errors were really their true attempts to trick the system just to take our money that wasn't due to them. I don't believe they performed any additional service. They do not talk to their customers about additional services needed. Then lie about what and why you owe them. Shady practices and dishonest services. On an island this small don't waste your time patronizing a business that is stealing from you when your not looking or able to play phone tag with them and insurance companies for hours.

Experiencia fantástica: READ THIS before you head to the mainland for dental work! Dr. Mullen and the whole team at Old Town are top notch. I’m talking completely painless (I didn’t feel the novacane injection at all, or any of the work that came afterward), fast (5-6 cavities drilled and filled in 60 min maybe?), and very solid work. Dr Mullen found several areas my Chicago dentist failed to address. SUPER reasonably priced too, I was surprised by that. So unless you need to hit Costco or something do yourself a favor, save the flight / 7-8 hour round trip drive to Miami for something fun, and go to Old Town to get your teefs taken care of

The office was clean, the wait time was short and the hygienist was Felix. The X-rays, Doctor exam, and cleaning could not have been any better. In fact the cleaning by Felix was actually the best cleaning I have ever had in my life, well at least in the last 40 years, (currently I am 60). Felix was aggressive with the cleaning, but not too aggressive to hurt, he just got the job done. You really never know how good or bad your hygienist is until you try another one. 5 stars and hats off to Felix. In fact, that was the first time I have ever tipped any dental hygienist. I am looking forward to my next appointment in six months. Thank you for a great cleaning and thanks to everyone at Old Town Dental.

As I’ve said before, his gentle but skillful work results in super smooth, beautifully cleaned teeth. He never pulls, pokes or hurts me in any way. He’s simply the best hygienist I’ve ever experienced.

I thought I’d be waiting all day but they actually got me in pretty quick and put a new post in. Everyone was really great about getting it taken care of. Now I’m just waiting for the crown.

I then was scheduled promptly to have two crowns replaced by Dr. Mullen. He was informative about the procedure and very gentle. From the front staff to the hygienists and Dr. Mullen they we're all very friendly.

The only thing missing were homemade cookies that I wouldn’t have eaten with these newly cleaned teeth. I was provided administrative support by the office staff all of whom were demonstrably professional. My visit was, as always, beyond superb. I've had several to date and each one was better that the one preceding it. Finally, a shout out about the "state of the arts" equipment and technology... whoa! If you aren't at OTD, I just have to ask... where are you?

He also let me know what I needed to do to elongate the life of my crown. The facility was immaculate and the rest of the staff friendly and helpful. Great office all around.

Experiencia fantástica: They took him in on Wednesday and cleaned up a lot of his crown and decided a tooth needed to be extracted the next morning with a dentist coming from Miami to extract his tooth. It went very well and the doctor called before the end of the day to see how he was doing.

Experiencia fantástica: Had an emergency Root canal done 4 days before vacation. They got me in next day and procedure was AMAZING. I mean what could be amazing about a root canal right? It went fast and no pain and when done the job went well. I'd def go here. Only drawback is you get put on hold a lot and stay on hold for long waits. Not every time but it does happen. That's all the bad I got. I love this place and it's people. Thank you Old Town Dental.

The office was clean, professional, and organized, something rarely encountered these days! For the first time in my life, I’m looking forward to them correcting my tooth issues without fear. I have no doubt that they will do an excellent job! Plus they take my cruddy insurance!! They also did my first oral exam in a matter of days, not months!
