Fantastic experience: The hygienist did a great job with my cleaning. She was very thorough and pleasant.Her name is Zoe. I hope to have her clean my teeth in the future but I think she’s only there on Friday and my next appointment is on a Thursday.

Fantastic experience: I highly recommend this dentist if you live in the NRV area. The customer service is great, the staff is very good, the hygenists and doctors explain things well, they do not try to push unneeded things on you, and they work with you on scheduling, payment, etc.

Fantastic experience: Six months ago, I cracked my two front teeth right in the center. Some would say it was barely noticeable, but it was noticeable to me and it made me very self-conscious so After visiting two other dentist, a friend recommended real life dental, they called me today after a cancellation and to say that I am deeply satisfied is an understatement. They truly gave me my smile back and when Dr Marquez gave me the mirror after the treatment I began to cry. I was so happy. I’m still happy thank you real life dental

Today, I had a new bridge fitted by Dr. Marquez and her assistant. (I am ashamed that I don’t remember her name, but she was great). The personable professionalism exhibited by Dr. Marquez and the dental technologist remains the primary reason I am a Real Life Dental customer!

Negative experience: Very disappointing billing and communication. I was told several times that my estimated cost would be $23 after the office reviewed my insurance information. Both the office and I knew the provider was out of network. I confirmed the amount again in person, and after the appointment they charged me that same $23. Later, I received an additional $107 bill. When I followed up, they simply said it was only an estimate—but how can an estimate be this far off? The dentist and assistant were good, but the billing and lack of clear communication were extremely disappointing. Had I known the real cost, I would have canceled.

Negative experience: So I went here originally in christiansburg , and they were very nice and explained everything to me Even the fact that I have a tooth that needs to be covered by a crown for a little over $400 was their quote. I did let the crown process go as it wasn't bothering me. I Proceeded to go for another cleaning About six months later , maybe a little bit over six months , and they did my cleaning charged me $135 and then quoted me again for my crown for OVER $1,000. I felt that both of the charges were a little absurd so I got a second opinion at matthew's dental. They quoted me a Crown and everything altogether for a little over $300, because my insurance covered the rest. This place is just a money hungry business that are taking advantage of their patients. Save your money, FSA, HSA AND GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!

From the moment we walk in the door she is greeted by name; all of the front office staff are knowledgeable and super friendly. Bayleigh, her hygienist, is an absolute wonder with children and makes every visit pleasant. She takes the time explain everything she is doing and why brushing and flossing are so important. We love it here!!!

Negative experience: I was a client of Real Life Dental since 2017 and I am disappointed at the gradual decline since then. Their customer service used to be top notch and now it's driven me to find another dentist. The only reason I have continued to go for the last few years is Baileigh. She is an great dental hygienist and is someone who listens and genuinely cares about her patients. About a year and a half ago our family lost our dental insurance. We wanted to continue to go RLD because of Baileigh and decided to only get cleanings to help offset the cost. During my recent appointment (which they cancelled twice at the last minute due to staffing issues) they told me that I couldn't get a cleaning without an exam. This wasn't discussed with me prior to the appointment and since the appointment time wasn't great due to having to reschedule, I just wanted to get my cleaning done and head to work. The office manager proceeded to argue with me that it is necessary to have an exam every 12 months. I am curious why this was never mentioned at my previous last two visits where I only got a cleaning. She was rude and had no cares in the world in working with me to find a happy medium. The conversation started in the lobby, in which another patient mentioned how ridiculous the conversation was getting. I was then asked to go into the office manager's office and the conversation was edgy and rude. I didn't want to continue to be treated like that, so after 10 years as a patient I asked to cancel all of my families future appointments and walked out with out a cleaning and adding find a new dentist to my "to do list." It is sad to see how much this office has changed in the last 10 years. Do better Real Life Dental.

As someone who's struggled with dental issues for a long time, finding good care has been a challenge. However, Dr. Thompson has been incredibly patient, knowledgeable, and attentive to my needs. I've had less-than-ideal experiences with dentists in the past, but my experience with Dr. Thompson has been positive. I'm grateful for their excellent care.

Fantastic experience: I needed a crown to save a tooth and was scheduled promptly - even called earlier than the appointment do come in for the crown. Dr. Marquez and her technician Lisa Gerald took great care of me and it was the best dental experience I have ever received (and I've been going to the dentist since the 1960's)! No pain or discomfort at all. Highly recommend them both for any dental needs.

Negative experience: Worst dentist office! I have had to reschedule numerous times. This last time because I didn’t have a chance to confirm the appointment by noon because I was in back to back meetings nonstop for the last several days. I missed the noon deadline by 45 mins and they had already cancelled it. I should be able to make an appointment and keep it when I was the one who scheduled it. So poorly run. The only reason they are still around is bc Blacksburg is so small and there are not enough dentists. Every time my kids and I go they try to “upsell” me on other services. It’s terrible that we don’t have more options.

Negative experience: 2025 Updates: I had a very disappointing experience with this dental office and will not be returning. On my first crown procedure, I was given no aftercare advice. Afterward, I chewed a piece of gum that was provided at the receptionist’s desk in their own office. Because I didn’t know chewing gum was a problem, I bit my tongue badly and bled for over 24 hours. The dentist showed no concern or apology, and I didn’t realize I should have gone back to the office for help. Instead, I ended up at a clinic where the doctor could do nothing except tell me to return to my dentist—while still charging me for the visit. Later, when I had my first wisdom tooth extraction, the Indian dentist I saw wasn’t empathetic at all during the procedure. That lack of care was my second to last trigger, but I tried to give the office a chance because of the hygienist, who has been the only reason I stayed for as long as I did. Scheduling and communication were equally frustrating. They messed up my appointments multiple times. If you’re late, even by 10 minutes, they’ll cancel your appointment, but when they keep you waiting, that’s considered acceptable. They constantly send unnecessary and repetitive forms by text to fill out on mobile devices, even when nothing has changed since the last year. They also send last-minute texts about new time slots (often only 30 minutes away), assuming patients are always free. Their communication system is a mess: I’ve received calls from fake-looking numbers, followed days later by texts from different unknown numbers asking to confirm appointments—even right after they had already called to confirm. To make it worse, they canceled one of my appointments simply because I didn’t respond to a random text message. They claimed they emailed me as well, but it turned out they had my email address wrong all along. The only positive I can mention is my hygienist, who I truly appreciated and will miss. But after the last incident, when they wasted my time by canceling my appointment without proper notice, I knew it was time to leave. The lack of professionalism, poor communication, and disregard for patients’ time and well-being made this a stressful experience. At that point, the complaints had piled up so high that the stress outweighed any benefit of staying. When I finally decided not to visit them anymore, I felt a huge relief. Honestly, I just hate this place for such terrible experience. Go elsewhere, their turnover rate is very high now and they couldn't keep the good dentist. Review from 2023: While hygienist - Baileigh service is great, I've found a recurrent administrative procedure to be a significant source of frustration. Despite having provided my details during past visits, I am repeatedly asked to refill forms sent via text message, each time before visit. While it's understood that keeping patient records current is crucial, repeating this process for unchanging information that's already on file seems counterproductive. Moreover, these constant text messages requesting form completion, though presumably well-intentioned, have proved to be intrusive and disruptive to my day. The assumption that all patients have the flexibility and means to consistently fill out these forms is an overreach. The process fails to account for the challenges of completing forms on a small phone screen, not to mention any potential limitations to one's internet connection.

Negative experience: Very bad clinic! We made an appointment for teeth cleaning on June 17th and the price was 165! On July 7th we went to the clinic and they told us it would cost 510! We paid! After checking, they told us they didn't have a license and couldn't do teeth cleaning! We paid 510 but nothing was done!

Positive experience: The quality consistency of care have declined in the past couple of years. My son was told by one dentist there that he needed 3 fillings. He had zero pain and spoke with another dentist there and was told to watch them. He just returned to find out they are fine and to watch one of them. Then they tried to make him feel bad about some minor crowding on his lowers. Seems to me like they are trying to make money off their patients rather than offering true care that is needed.

My hygienist Bailey is the best.. honestly the entire staff are great.. every experience I have is great here.. I don't wanna say it's a pleasure having dental work done.. but... Fantastic experience: Last week, I had the best experience in a dentist chair ever! I had a 2 hour appointment for a crown. Real Life Dental has all the latest high-tech tools. The dentist, who was knowledgeable and an artist with the drill, used a laser to map my existing tooth. The data was sent to a computer controlled milling machine which created my crown to the exact shape of the old tooth. The crown was cemented in place, my bite was checked and I was out of the office in 1 1/2 hours. Easy-peasy and no issues or adjustments needed.

Fantastic experience: I absolutely love this dentist. I have a fear of dentist and they help me with that. They're extremely nice and very gentle. I love how they have the TV so you can watch it while you get your teeth worked on. I definitely recommend them! I don't remember the name of the dentist I see, but she is extremely nice and professional!!

Negative experience: I missed my appointment with my regular hygienist of 12 years, so I thought I would make an appointment with Real Life Blacksburg to make up for the missed visit. Apparently I didn't arrive early enough to complete the necessary paperwork. The receptionist was NOT happy and proceeded to make me feel that I was an inconvenience for her and the staff. I felt so unwelcomed I just canceled the visit. They're probably ok with it, but I won't return.

Negative experience: I started my dental journey with Damon Thompson when he was in practice with his father. Dr. Damon Thompson has always been a superb, professional, and affable dentist! Over the years, I have watched his own practice evolve. He always maintains the very best of colleagues and staff. Most recently, however, I experienced a tactic that I found to be unprofessional and unethical. I had previously called to set up an appointment. The receptionist gave me that appointment slot, and I viewed that as a verbal contract when I agreed to the appointment time and date. In other words, our interaction established that we both agreed to act in good faith to honor that appointment. A week before my appointment, I got phone message from Jeannie at Real Life, who said, "...give us a call by 2 o'clock today" to confirm that appointment. At 2:54 today, I received a call from Leslie, who said, "...unfortunately, since we haven't heard from you, we will be taking that off the schedule." A week? And threats. Again, this is totally unethical and intimidating practice on the part of Real Life Dental and a blemish on dentistry in general. I am appalled. C.N. Bean
